Sacol is an island in Zamboanga City. It is only less than 5 kilometers from downtown Zamboanga City.
- There are 5 barangays in the island of Sacol: Busay, Landang Gua, Landang Laum, Pangapuyan, Pasilmanta.
The barangay of Taluksangay is the closest barangay on the main land of Zamboanga City, less than 1 kilometer away. Separated by water.
Sacol is neglected by the city administration. Electricity and fresh water supply is a problem. Education is a problem. Access to medicine, groceries, and other food items that are everyday conveniences for the locals of the mainland, are problems for the residences of the 5 barangays in Sacol Island.
Some suggestions for the development of Sacol Island:
- The channel between Sacol and Taluksangay in its deepest section is less that 30 feet. Build two foot paths from Taluksangay to Sacol. One hundred meters apart. Each foot path is one meter wide on top. The cement foot path will be anchored to the base of the channel. Make the construction strong enough so the tide won’t take the foot paths down. People can travel on the foot paths.
- What to do with the man-made lagoon between the two foot paths? Build a land mass bridge. How? All the garbage and debris of Sacol, Taluksangay and other barangays near it will be dumped in this lagoon. Within a decade or three this lagoon will be filled. Then this can be turned into a natural land bridge.
- Build the International Airport in Sacol:

The future expansion of Zamboanga City’s International Airport (ZIA) and Cargo Terminal should be established in the city-owned big Island of Sacol. Sacol Island is the most ideal and logical choice for the future expansion of the city’s international airport because of its location and isolation from the limited flatlands of the city proper.
By locating and building the future airport in Sacol Island, the city will wisely and thankfully provide a blueprint for all future building expansion within the limited peninsula flatlands of Zamboanga City, allowing for desirable skyscrapers to be built and promoted without worries of whether the building’s height will be in the flight path of a nearby flatlands airport, as is currently suggested for Barrio Mercedes. City officials and residents like to envision their city as becoming the next Makati, Singapore, or Hong Kong of the Philippines, with their signature tall skyscrapers hugging valuable lowland and coastal real estate. Can this vision happen when the Barrio Mercedes airport location seriously prohibits that ideal picture?
