Educational Note: Only 17 of the 18 administrative regions of the Philippines are under the jurisdiction and general supervision of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is the sole exception — it operates under its own organic law and answers directly to the President of the Philippines.. (This distinction is often misunderstood, as many Filipinos assume BARMM is under the DILG — it is not.)
Overview
Region X, also known as Northern Mindanao, is an administrative region in the Philippines composed of five provinces:
Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental
Cagayan de Oro City serves as the regional center. It is one of the most populous regions in Mindanao with a rich mix of ethnic groups and cultures.

Geography
Northern Mindanao features diverse geography, including mountain ranges, plateaus, valleys, and coastal areas along the Mindanao Sea. It has fertile lands and abundant natural resources such as rivers, waterfalls, and fertile soil ideal for agriculture. The Camiguin island is famous for its volcanic landscapes and white sand beaches.
People and Culture
The region is inhabited by several ethnolinguistic groups including Cebuano-speaking settlers, indigenous Bukidnon and Manobo tribes, and others. Christianity, particularly Roman Catholicism, is predominant, while Islam is practiced in pockets. The region retains rich indigenous traditions and cultural festivals that celebrate their diverse heritage.
Economy
Northern Mindanao’s economy is driven by agriculture, with major crops like corn, rice, bananas, pineapples, and coconut. The region also benefits from mining and fisheries. Cagayan de Oro is a commercial and industrial hub supporting trade, commerce, and services.
Festivals
Higalaay Festival in Cagayan de Oro celebrates the feast of St. Augustine every August 28.
Kaamulan Festival in Bukidnon is an ethnic cultural festival honoring indigenous communities and celebrating the harvest.
Lanzones Festival in Camiguin is a 4-day event in October celebrating the region’s famous lanzones fruit.
Government
Region X is overseen by a regional center located in Cagayan de Oro City. Each province has its own local government headed by governors. The region participates actively in national governance while focusing on regional development and inter-provincial coordination.
