SOUTHERN LEYTE, March 26 (PIA) -- To strengthen the local government units’ knowledge on disaster preparedness, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) conducted a two-day community-based multi-hazard mapping at Silago, this province.
OCD-Southern Leyte Provincial Coordinator Marichu Tan reported that the training held at Silago Municipal Audtirorim, Thursday and Friday was attended by Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council members, barangay officials throughout the municipality, teaching staff and personnel and Silago Rescue Team.
It is aimed at strengthening the capacities of the local government unit, enhancement of knowledge in disaster preparedness – how to respond and how to identify multi-hazard situation in their areas, among others.
Tan disclosed that the topics discussed during the seminar-training were the Incident Command System, Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment and orientation on the DRRM policies and strategies, while the speakers include Epinfanio Pabilona and Ms. Tan.
“An actual identification of hazard-prone areas was made by each barangay-participants which was identified as Poblacion 1 and Poblacion 2, as pilot barangays which are considered as high-risk barangays in Silago town,” Tan revealed.
The participants were required to identify the problems within the area of concern such as the problem of drainage system and its proper construction, houses if properly elevated, among other possibilities for a 2-day heavy rainfall and the possibility of flooding, and the like.
OCD Southern Leyte had been conducting community-based hazard mapping, contingency planning, fire and earthquake drills, DRRM orientation, to name a few in municipalities throughout Southern Leyte, Tan said. Other municipalities are yet to be scheduled, she added. (PIA 8-Southern Leyte)
