MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Feb | MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Feb 6 (PIA) -- Provincial Governor Damian G. Mercado extolled public and private partnership as he expressed deep gratitude to the Philippine Nurses Association in Metropolitan, D.C., USA (PNAMD) mission benefiting at least 3,198 Southern Leytenos with medical problems. | ||
“If left alone on the shoulders of the provincial government, it cannot affort the expenses to have all sick people healed," Governor Mercado disclosed during the closing ceremony honoring the 71-member mission team that conducted the weeklong medical, surgical, and dental mission in Maasin City last January 23- 27. | |||
Governor Mercado said that the voluntary acts of the private sector like the PNA from Metropolitan DC in USA, is a good example of government and private sector partnering for development and service delivery. | |||
According to PNAMD president Alice N. Andam, the dominantly Filipino volunteers composing the mission- team came all the way from United States of America were mostly medical practitioners such as surgeons, anestheologists, pediatricians, ob-gyn, operating room nurses, pharmacists, nurses, dentists, and some volunteers. | |||
Andam reported that 2,135 out-patients got medical treatment, 708 had their teeth extracted while, 90 patients underwent major operations, and 157, minor operations. All the patients also enjoyed free medicines. | |||
The 100 barangay tanods who assisted in securing peace and orderly crowd in three different venues for the medical, surgical, and dental locations were all given multivitamins, Andam said. | |||
The surgical team conducted operations on gall bladder stone extractions, myoma, cysts, breast mass, hernia, goiter, broken bones, cleft, eye cataract operations, among others, she reported. | |||
The mission team was also bolstered with three eye specialists coming from the local “Sagip sa Mata Foundation” based in Tacloban City and logistics from the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC) headed by Dr. Paula Sydiongco, she said. | |||
According to Andam, this is the 10th medical, surgical, and dental mission they have conducted in the Philippines. (PIA8 –Southern Leyte) | |||
