MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Dec 26 (PIA) -- The Office of the Civil Defense – Provincial Office urges for pre-emptive evacuation in flood prone barangays in St. Bernard as the water level along the Lawigan River has risen three meters beyond the critical level, as of 1:00 p.m. today.
MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Dec. 27 (PIA) - The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) – Southern Leyte Provincial Office has distributed the 4,300 bags of salt fertilizers among the eighteen municipalities and the City of Maasin in the province.
OCD provincial coordinator Marichu Tan reported that pre-emptive evacuation of residents along the Lawigan River to start now before it gets dark particularly in Barangay Mahayahay in St. Bernard.
According to PCA Provincial Head Manuel Sembrado, the salt fertilizers coming from the national government were distributed free of charge among the coconut farmers at a minimum of 226 sacks of fertilizers for each f the eighteen municipalities and 232 for the city of Maasin.
She reported that more than 14 individuals and an infant in Barangay Carnaga have already been evacuated due to waters reaching critical level as heavy rains continue to pour in the said area. Barangay Tambis had been alerted for possible evacuation anytime.
Each coconut farmers will receive a minimum of two sacks of fertilizers, he said.
Four families in Barangay Hindag-an had also been evacuated to safer grounds.
Sembrano added that those coconut trees located in the interior barangays, where at least it is found two kilometers away from the coastlines radius, were given priority in the distribution.
Meanwhile, for two days now, the municipalities of Silago, St. Bernard, San Juan, and San Ricardo have been experiencing heavy rains and were advised by the OCD for pre-emptive evacuation especially residents near the river banks. (ESG-PIA SoLeyte)
He said the salt fertilizers were found effective and resulted to more production after one year of application according to PCA scientists.
