MANILA, Philippines — Non-government organization Health Care Without Harm-Southeast Asia (HCWH-SEA) has turned over non-mercury thermometers to the province of Marinduque in a bid to make the Philippines free from mercury-based health care devices.
Mangi, 17, is a freshman student taking up Bachelor of Science in Electronics & Communications Engineering. He will represent the MIMAROPA Region in the national level competition on Dec. 6, 2011 at Assembly Hall, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas(BSP), A. Mabini St.,Ermita, Manila.

As regional champion, Mangi received a cash prize of P5,000,Certificate of Recognition & a Trophy. His coach, Engr. Nelson Rufino M. Montejo received P2,500 cash & certificate of recognition plus a trophy for the school he represented.
HCWH-SEA executive director Merci Ferrer led the distribution of non-mercurial thermometers from OMRON Healthcare, a partner of HCWH-SEA in the anti-mercury campaign.
Other winners in the said competition were Isaiah Kent P. Bagatsolon from the Divine Word College of San Jose in Occidental Mindoro, 1st Runner-up; and Casandra Ysabel G. Atencio of Palawan State University, 2nd Runner-up. They received a cash prize of P3,000 and P2,000, respectively, plus a certificate of recognition for each one of them.

The thermometers were turned over to the Office of Marinduque Governor Carmencita Reyes for distribution to the six municipalities and the Provincial Health Office.

“We support the initiative of the province to encourage their hospitals to shun away from mercury and to serve as a model to other local government units,” said Ferrer.

The Regional Development Council (RDC) of the Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) region passed two resolutions pertaining to the mercury issue last July.

According to HCHW-SEA, the RDC serves as the regional machinery to coordinate national and local government activities particularly in formulating and implementing development plans and programs for the region.
