MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Philippines – In its efforts to promoting awareness on the use of Geographic Information System (GIS), this city’s local government together with the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College-Regional Environmental Information System (UPVTC-REIS) last November 17 celebrated the international GIS Day.
MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Nov. 18 (PIA) -– In order to ensure that education and health services required by the Pantawid Pampamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) are available for the identified beneficiaries, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Office-8 will initiate a Supply Side Assessment orientation on November 25, 2011 in Maasin City.
 
DSWD-8 Director III Jaime Eclavea disclosed that the supply side assessment orientation cum write-shop “provides a framework for prioritizing, gathering, analyzing supply-side information which is intended to identify the likely impact that the 4Ps has on the provision of health and education services.
The celebration was also joined by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH – Environment and Rural Development (EnRD) and Decentralization (DP) Programs.
The activity to be held at the Sangguniang Panglungsod (SP) Session Hall here will gather Department of Education supervisors and identified teachers, Maasin City Health Unit Physicians, SP Committee Chairman on Health and Education, among other concerned. At least 80 participants are expected to participate in the undertaking, the report added.
 
It was learned that Maasin City is now identified as additional pilot area for Pantawid Pampamilyang Pilipino program of the Aquino Administration which aims to reduce extreme poverty.
GIS Day is an annual global event held every November showcasing technology’s real time applications which can create positive impacts in society.
Supply side assessment is conducted upon the identification of the target areas using the supply side assessment tool on health and education. It is also aimed to determine the readiness of the local government units in ensuring delivery of priority education and health services for the target poor households.
 
It is packaged on education and health and nutrition focusing to 0-14 year’s old children and pregnant women, the report added. (rgc/PIA-SoLeyte)
The system elevates plain, generic maps since it is a computer-based mapping technology that can contribute in improving local planning providing as it does visuals, details and accuracy.
 
GIS is also considered a very potent tool in enabling correct decisions in conducting plans as it determines the location of infrastructure and patterns of settlements/growth of population, and helps in identifying the safest areas to put proposed evacuation sites in the event of certain hazards such as floods or earthquakes.
 
UPVTC-REIS representatives say Southern Leyte is positive in using GIS as it compliments their goal of intensifying environmental awareness by promoting disaster prevention and preparedness.
