MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Philippines – In its efforts to promoting awareness on the use of Geographic Information System (GIS), this city’s local government together with the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College-Regional Environmental Information System (UPVTC-REIS) last November 17 celebrated the international GIS Day.
The celebration was also joined by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH – Environment and Rural Development (EnRD) and Decentralization (DP) Programs.
GIS Day is an annual global event held every November showcasing technology’s real time applications which can create positive impacts in society.
The system elevates plain, generic maps since it is a computer-based mapping technology that can contribute in improving local planning providing as it does visuals, details and accuracy.
GIS is also considered a very potent tool in enabling correct decisions in conducting plans as it determines the location of infrastructure and patterns of settlements/growth of population, and helps in identifying the safest areas to put proposed evacuation sites in the event of certain hazards such as floods or earthquakes.
UPVTC-REIS representatives say Southern Leyte is positive in using GIS as it compliments their goal of intensifying environmental awareness by promoting disaster prevention and preparedness.
