MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, October 12 (PIA) -- Despite the weakening of Typhoon “Ramon” to a tropical depression early this morning, Maasin City Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) distributed relief goods since last night until this morning to 300 evacuees who fled to different barangays at the height of typhoon “Ramon”.
MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Oct 13 (PIA) -– “Handwashing with soap is the most effective and cheapest way to prevent diseases,” Department of Education (DepEd) Supervising Nurse Teresita Marquez disclosed in an interview with PIA-Maasin, Tuesday.
According to MSWDO Febe Maria Sta.Cruz, the hundreds of evacuees coming from Barangays Combado, Manhilo, Canturing, Mambajao, Asuncion and Tagnipa, all of Maasin City, voluntarily evacuated to respective barangay halls, DOTC office in Barangay Combado last night at the height of the typhoon.
Marquez said that October 15 is set as the Global Handwashing Day, but since it falls on Sunday, “DepEd Southern Leyte Division will conduct the Global Handwashing Day on Monday, Oct 17 at Bolod-Bolod Elemntary School, Barangay Bolod-Bolod, Saint Bernard, this province.
It was further reported that one house owned by one of the evacuees due to the rising creek in Barangay Combado was also hit by a fallen tree that almost cut the house totally.
The said activity which is relative to Essential Health Care Package program of the education department will be participated by different stakeholders such as the local government units, the Parents-Teachers Association officials, school principals, head teachers, among other division teachers and DepEd health personnel throughout Southern Leyte Division.
Most of the evacuees were threatened with the rising waters along the river banks of Canturing River and spelling over to Barangay Mambajao also, more swelling creeks in Barangays Tagnipa, Manhilo and Combado and fear of storm surge in Barangay Asuncion, Sta. Cruz added.
“While the other school districts throughout the (18) municipalities of the province will have a synchronized activity at their own level,” Marquez bared. This will be led by the school’s principal, she added.
The each relief good distributed to the evacuees found at the evacuation centers consists of rice, noodles, canned goods, among others, she said.
Proper handwashing has been echoing and reinforcing the call for improved hygiene practices not only here in the country but worldwide. Global Handwashing Day will be the centerpiece of activities that will mobilize millions of people across five continents to wash their hands with soap.
Earlier today, Maasin City Mayor Maloney Samaco cancelled its earlier instruction to suspend the government officers operations, however, due to the development of the weakening to tropical depression Ramon, government works resumed this afternoon.
As of school year 2011-2012, Southern Leyte Schools Division has a total enrolment of 53,933 for the elementary and Kindergaten departments, Marquez disclosed during the Provincial Nutrition Planning with the Technical Working Group held at Supercha Restaurant in Maasin City. (rgc/PIA-SoLeyte)
Meanwhile, DPWH– Southern Leyte reported that the earlier reported landslide in Daang Maharlika – Sogod road network particularly in Pancho Villa section is now passable to heavy traffic after the removal of the landslide materials due to typhoon Ramon. (PIA SoLeyte/esg)
