DUMAGUETE CITY – A new provincial election supervisor of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Oriental has been designated for the May 9 national and local polls. Lawyer Lionel Castillano, the provincial election supervisor of Cebu, will assume his post effective January 15, replacing lawyer Eddie Aba who was designated to the chief Comelec post in Bohol. Castillano said on Wednesday he will conduct next week an online meeting with the election officers and his staff to update them on new Comelec resolutions and memorandum.
DAVAO CITY – A former leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) described Menandro Villanueva alias “Ka Bok” as a slaughterer of the poor and killer of freedom. In a statement Thursday, Joy "Ka Amihan" Saguino, former secretary of Guerilla Front 20 under Sub-regional Committee 1 of the NPA’s Southern Mindanao Region, said the people of Davao Region and Mindanao are witnesses to the reign of terror and violence that Villanueva has planted for five decades. Villanueva, who had several warrants of arrests for multiple murders, double frustrated murders, arson, robbery with intimidation, and rebellion, among others, was killed in an encounter with government troops in Davao de Oro on January 5.

'''112K DSWD food packs sent to ‘Odette’ victims in E. Visayas'''<br>
'''DA eyes adlai, strawberry farming as emerging crops for NorMin'''<br>
TACLOBAN CITY – About 112,784 family food packs (FFPs) have been distributed to cities and towns affected by Typhoon Odette in Eastern Visayas in the past three weeks, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported on Wednesday. The number of FFPs delivered to local governments represents 106 percent of the projected population of about 106,705 in badly-hit communities, according to the DSWD. “Although we have already covered all the target population, the DSWD will continue to release food packs based on (the) request for augmentation from local governments,” DSWD 8 (Eastern Visayas) information officer Abelardo Bibat said.
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of Agriculture Region 10 (DA-10) has seen a potential in adlai and strawberry as emerging crops in Northern Mindanao that can be sold in mainstream markets in the future. During a media forum on Thursday, DA-10 Technical Director Carlota Madriaga said adlai, also referred by indigenous peoples as "agglay," is easy to produce even through organic production technology, and it grows in any places regardless of climate and soil conditions. "In the time of the pandemic (when it started in 2020), we have established the Adlai Development Program where we train farmers in planting adlai, and help them in the processing and marketing of products," he said.
