ABOUT RAUL LAMBINO
by Valli Faith Estacion Bibit
01/02/10

A New Year unfolds, it is time to do right.

My brave and joyous life has included over 20 years of fulfilling work for many individual Members of Congress--- some of whom have been truly exceptional, and have contributed greatly to empowering Filipino lives.

With this rich experience behind me, I strongly feel that I can help you make a choice from the long list of candidates who are seeking your vote in the forthcoming May elections.

Somewhere in that huge cultural vat--- from comic book heroes to professional athletes, from grade school teachers to our favorite politician-- - we have concocted our definitions of leadership.

But in a country grown weary and cynical about moral leadership and good governance, what kind of elected leader do we need?

When we think of life-changing leadership, most of us usually equate it to majestic, boisterous events in our lives.

But effective leadership is not always a grand opera. Some of the most life-changing events in history have, in fact, been provoked by a remarkably quiet kind of leadership-- - much like the circumstances that have today pushed a reluctant and self-effacing lawyer like RAUL LAMBINO into the political limelight.

Raul Lambino’s life story--- like your story and mine--- has been the story of possibility, of perseverance and of dreams.

A certified promdi like most of us, Raul earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, cum laude, from the University of Pangasinan in 1981. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree, valedictorian and cum laude, also from the University of Pangasinan in 1986.

I ask you to consider that Raul is ONE OF US. Like you and I, he is a child of ordinary Filipinos whose lives have been anchored on in this promise: that each generation will leave its children a better life.

At the heart of this solemn promise is the conviction that every Filipino who is willing to work hard, dream big and sacrifice greatly can make his dreams come true.

An active trial lawyer and professor of law, Raul rose to prominence-- -somewhat reluctantly- -- when he successfully argued in the Supreme Court that there exists an enabling law to undertake a people’s initiative to change our Constitution.

He eventually led the signature campaign to amend or revise the 1987 Philippine Constitution.

His beliefs were not popular, but he braved criticism because of the conviction that some provisions of our Constitution are simply not capable anymore of responding to the needs of our time.

I ask you not to judge Raul Lambino for his position on the matter, but to recognize that he possesses the TENACITY OF CONVICTION that we need to make the hard decisions that will finally move our country forward.

Raul has been a Consultant and Coordinator for the Philippine House of Representatives contingent to the Commission on Appointments; a Consultant of the Speaker of the Philippine House of Representatives from 1995 to 1998 (and from 2000 to 2001); Chief of Staff of Senator Loren Legarda from 1998 to 2000; Chief of Staff of Speaker Jose De Venecia from 1995 to 1998; and Acting Provincial Board Member of the Province of Pangasinan from 1987 to 1988.

I ask you to consider this WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE that will enable Raul to competently give voice to our dreams in the Senate.

Raul is an Ambassador for Peace at the Inter-religious and International Confederation for World Peace; and the Inter-religious and International Peace Council.

I ask you to reflect on the fact that men of faith and peace like Raul understand that FREEDOM MUST BE MEASURED AGAINST STANDARDS OF NUTRITION, EDUCATION AND SELF-GOVERNMENT. Indeed, our people cannot be free unless they have food on the table; the ability to read and write; and the power to chart their own course.

Raul is one of the founding fathers and champions of the Moral Force Movement.

I ask you to affirm that graft and corruption has robbed Filipinos of precious, scarce resources for food, medicines, housing and other essential services. In the same breath, I ask that you consider the fact that Raul is one of very few candidates for Senator who truly acknowledge that GOVERNMENT SHOULD HOLD ITSELF TO ACCOUNT. For when government becomes the lawbreaker, it becomes the missionary of a crime most heinous against our people.

Raul is married to Marilyn De Guzman, and has three children: Mark Ronald, Mary Rhauline, and Meryllainne Rhacquel.

I ask you to consider that Raul is a Filipino PARENT like you and I.

It is time to do right. It is time for meaningful change. Disabuse your mind that it is an impossible task we face. It is not. WE CAN DO IT. One step at a time. One Filipino at a time.

The change begins with you. You have the ability to transform your life and help transform the country---- and it all begins with your very own power of choice.

You can choose rest over work, entertainment over education, doubt over confidence, or vice over health.

You can choose a candidate who is popular or RAUL LAMBINO who has a clear vision of what needs to be done.

You can choose a candidate who can entertain by fine oratory or RAUL LAMBINO who can--- by his upbringing and experience-- - work hard along with the rest of us.

The choice is ours to make. The vote is ours to cast.

Let us cast our votes for RAUL LAMBINO and elect him to the Senate. It is time to do right.
