FOR the past years, there has been an increasing interest in the use of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology in businesses and households.

Together with the increasing trend in solar power is also the increase in the demand for competent human resources in this industry. Solar PV technology can create jobs, not just in manufacturing, but also in installation and maintenance.

In answer to this opportunity for the labor sector and users of solar panels, VocTech held a seminar called “Solar Energy: The New Paradigm in Energy Source” last Saturday at VocTech’s campus on the second floor of BAI Center, Cebu South Road, Basak-San Nicolas, Cebu City. The seminar is an offshoot of VocTech’s partnership with Lightup Innovative Products Inc. and Japan Solar Philippines Inc.

Lightup Innovative Products Inc. is a direct importer, wholesaler, and retailer of solar-power related products and emergency preparedness products while Japan Solar Philippines Inc. is a manufacturer of solar panels and is also into renewable energy.

The main speaker of the seminar was Simon John Corocoto, president of Lightup Innovative Products. Corocoto presented a comprehensive discussion on the emerging trends in the Solar PV Technology and the key components of solar PV technology.

Corocoto discussed the advantages of using solar PV technology. He cited the independence from oil-dependent energy sources, the power crisis in the country, mitigating global warming and air pollution as the main reasons there is a need to consider solar energy as an alternative source.

After his presentation, he invited the participants to a hands-on demonstration on solar peripherals, tools and equipment. The attendees actively participated in the live demonstration.

Another speaker in the seminar was Suryono Tjoeng, technical manager of Japan Solar Philippines. Tjoeng discussed the importance of quality in solar PV technology. The other speaker, engineer Jun Yap, presented the technical side of solar PV technology.

The three-part solar PV technology course of VocTech was also launched during the seminar.
