MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur: Newly elected mayor, Majul Usman Gandamra vowed to clean up the violence-torn city from illegal activities and atrocities.
Social Security System (SSS) Jolo Branch recently conducted a series of orientation and information seminars to different sectors of the community in an effort to intensify its SSS coverage in the Sulu province.

Gandamra was proclaimed by city Board of Canvassers (BoC) led by lawyer Michael Ignes on Friday after defeating former mayor Omar Ali Solitario in a close match mayoral race here, coupled by sporadic firings from unknown locations.
During the 12th Annual General Assembly of the Sulu Provincial Employees Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SPEMC), SSS Jolo Accounts Management Section Junior Analyst Joel A. Tammang promoted the various benefits and programs offered by the SSS to around 300 participants present at the Capitol Multi-Purpose Gymnasium in Patikul, Sulu on April 25.

The mayor-elect was a former assemblyman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and ran under the Liberal Party (LP).
“The SSS, through our Jolo Branch, is expecting an increase in SSS membership since job order and contractual workers from the Sulu Provincial Office will soon be enrolled under the KaltaSSS-Collect Program, formerly called the E-AlkanSSSya Program, through the initiative of SPEMC Chairperson Hja. Nur Anida M. Dammang,” Tammang shared.

He garnered 21,684 votes, with only 270 votes over Solitario’s 21,414. Marawi has 49,114 total registered voters but some 4,334 did not go to the polling precinct citing security and other unknown reasons.
The SSS also held back-to-back information drives in Jolo, Sulu starting with fish vendors and entrepreneurs at the Serantes Fish Market on April 18. Tammang encouraged the informal sector workers to register as self-employed individuals for their social protection and invited them to form a group and enroll with the AlkanSSSya Program to give them a convenient and affordable means of saving for their monthly SSS contributions.

Several attacks have been recorded in the city during and after Election Day, which authorities are still determining if these were election-related violence.
The day after, Tammang facilitated two separate orientations to inform members on various SSS matters at the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development, Inc. along Port Area St. at the Walled City in Jolo, Sulu. The SSS also initiated the coverage of job order and contractual workers of the Rural Health Unit - Jolo under the Department of Health – Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao on April 13.

The attacks included the killing of Gandamra’s supporters such as the brothers Hapidh Usman and Jalalloden Usman.
“With the painstaking effort of the branch to cover potential SSS members at all bases, the SSS is not only expecting increase in the number of registered members but also anticipates solid growth with its future collections,” Tammang said.

Gandamra said he aims to “stop all forms of violence” including the rampant illegal drugs and other criminal activities while eyeing the recovery of the city’s progress and economic development.
SSS Jolo Branch serves 19 municipalities and supervises SSS Tawi-Tawi Service Office which covers an additional 11 municipalities.

He also promised to deliver all basic services to his constituents and ensure peace and order in the city.

He said he will draft a comprehensive plan for waste management program and address the traffic woes facing the residents daily.

The only Islamic city in the Philippines, Marawi was also gripped by other criminal activities such as kidnapping, carnapping, killing and other atrocities hindering the peace and development in the city and the province of Lanao del Sur as a whole.

Meanwhile, new governor-elect of Lanao del Sur, Soraya Alonto-Adoing, assured good relations between capitol and city hall under Gandamra after years of political isolation from the province.

She will replace her son, outgoing Gov. Mamintal “Bombit” Alonto-Adiong Jr., who was elected vice governor.

Alonto-Adoing, daughter of the late Sen. Domocao Alonto, beat outgoing Marawi mayor Fahad “Pre” Salic with a wide gap of 75,924 votes.

Salic, who survived the April 9 ambush in Cagayan de Oro City, ran as governor under United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) after completing his third term. He became mayor following his brother Omar Ali Solitario’s successive terms.
