Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

SSS Dagupan processing center reopened

By Liwayway Yparraguirre (PNA)

DAGUPAN CITY -- The Social Security System (SSS) reopened Monday its processing center extension office here to better serve its members.

“On the back of our branch expansion efforts, the creation of an extension office to decongest our Tarlac processing center will help reduce the turnaround time in handling SSS transactions,” said SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel Dooc, who led the center’s blessing and inauguration.

The new SSS facility receives and processes the sickness, maternity, employees’ compensation medical claim reimbursement, disability, retirement, and death claims.

“As we bring SSS services closer to our members, we also want to ensure that benefits and privileges are given immediately to the rightful members and beneficiaries. Rest assured that SSS will provide quality service for the benefit of transacting members and employers here in Pangasinan,” Dooc added.

SSS Commissioner Gonzalo Duque said it was in 2010 when the SSS processing center was transferred and was centralized at the Tarlac processing facility.

“We received a lot of complains dahil pupunta pa raw sila sa (because they have still to get to) Tarlac. I worked it out na maibalik dito (it will be reopened here), the SSS president, through the Board, approved it,” Duque said.

“Dati sa (before in) Tarlac, they said processing time is six days but reports reaching us says it took one month. But with the processing center opened here, at most, it will take three days to process claims,” he said.

Duque said the SSS Dagupan processing center started operating and transacting business last Sept. 24.

About PHP14 million benefits/claims have so far been processed and released, he added.

P’sinan Division II Sports Meet 2018 reels off

(PIO/SMDG, Sunday Punch)

LINGAYEN– “Just like in life, challenges in sports must always bring out the best in you.”

This was pointed out by Governor Amado Espino III in his speech during the opening ceremonies of Pangasinan Division II Sports Meet 2018 held at the Mangaldan Central School on October 25.

With over 2,000 delegates from 22 municipalities, athletes clash for supremacy in the following sporting events: athletics, arnis, archery, badminton, basketball, baseball, billiards, chess, dance sports, football, futsal, gymnastics, softball, sepak takraw, pencak silat, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, wushu, swimming and boxing.

The governor also reminded the players that they must compete in the spirit of sportsmanship, fair play and above all, to foster respect with co-players all throughout the game.

Recounting his experiences as a sports buff himself, the provincial chief executive urged athletes to hone their sports prowess and never let setbacks shatter their dreams.

Espino urged coaches and parents to continue to support the aspirations of their players not only to bring home victory, but also, to become a better person even outside the sports arena.

“Ang magandang kinabukasan ng ating mga estudyante ay magbubunga ng magandang kinabukasan ng ating mahal na probinsya ng Pangasinan,” Governor beamed with pride as he affirmed provincial government’s commitment in supporting the youth.

Meanwhile, Schools Division Superintendent Atty. Donato Balderas, Jr. pointed out that the sports competition aims to inculcate a positive good outlook in the students as it prepares for the formation of teams to compete in the upcoming Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) Meet 2019.

Challenging the athletes to bring back the championship title in R1AA, Delia Hufana-Patalud, public schools district supervisor and overall chairman in this year’s Division II sports meet, urged all players to give their best shot if they want to be part of the team.

The awarding ceremony of four-day sports meet is will be held today October 28 at the Mangaldan Central School.

Pangasinan teen to represent PH in UN youth leaders confab

By Ahikam Pasion (PNA)

CALASIAO, Pangasinan – A 17-year-old student here is set to represent the Philippines in an international convention for youth leaders to be hosted by the United Nations early next year.

Zayra Grace Llobrera will be representing the country in the Asia World Model United Nations II (AWMUN) on Jan. 30 to Feb. 2, 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Llobrera, a Grade 12 student at the Calasiao Comprehensive National High School, is one of Pangasinan’s blooming youth leaders as she is also president of her school’s student council, one of the Top 10 Outstanding Student Leaders of Pangasinan, and a freelance writer.

"Zayra is an achiever, and she never ceases to amaze me”, said Danilo Soriano, one of her advisers. “Anything she does she tends to excel at.”

Since childhood, Llobrera has been a high-flier and has been joining competitions.

“As a youth and president of our school, I believe it is our responsibility to broaden our knowledge, especially with issues concerning our country's current stand and be a catalyst towards nation building. That principle of mine is the reason why I want to join the international convention,” she said in an interview.

According to Soriano, she aimed higher after attending a UNESCO event last September.

“I got interested in the event that they have been promoting, I filed an application, which eventually led to this”, she added. Llobrera aims to bring home the bacon for the “best position paper”, which she is currently working on, to bring more glory to the country and her hometown.

“I am currently writing a position paper about issues concerning our society, and I hope we win this one,” she said. The AWMUN targets 1,000 delegates from all parts of the world so youth leaders could create networks and communities that would enable them to know other leaders, who share similar interests and eventually help their respective countries.

“The AWMUN is important to develop the youth’s skills, especially when it comes to diplomacy and leadership. I think it's important to be part of the change, to help provide that youth view, and it's important that decisions being made are what the youth want, too, and I believe that she can help on that,” Soriano said.

‘Grab Trike’ launched in Pangasinan town

By Liwayway Yparraguirre (PNA)

BINALONAN, Pangasinan -- The municipal government here and Grab Philippines have joined forces and launched “Grab Trike Binalonan” on Friday.

Mayor Ramon Guico III said Grab, the operator of an online ride-hailing app, is commonly known for four-wheel transportation.

“(But) here, ‘Grab Trike Binalonan’ is for tricycles, and anybody or any member of a TODA (Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Association) can register, so long as they possess a tricycle franchise issued by the municipal government,”

Guico said, noting that out of an estimated 1,500 tricycles with franchise in Binalonan, 100 have already registered with Grab.

The mayor said the city government had earlier reached out to Grab Philippines, convincing the company to bring the Grab Trike service here.

Binalonan is the third local government to partner with Grab service after Pampanga province and Balanga in Bataan province.

“This is advantageous to both tricycle drivers and passengers. Anywhere you are, you can book a ride. For the driver, he can have a passenger anytime. Grab Trike Binalonan operates 24/7, meaning a passenger is assured of a tricycle ride anytime of the day,” Guico said. “Just like a ‘Grab Taxi’, the fare is fixed and it is up to the passenger if he wants to give a tip.”

He dispelled rumors that the new system would deprive other TODA tricycles of their livelihood, clarifying it is one way of increasing their income. They are welcome to register, he added.

Grab representatives, led by city operations and expansion head Gines Barot, were present during the launch.

“We are excited to bring the service of Grab here,” Barot said, calling Grab Trike a “door-to-door” tricycle service.

Grab Trike operators, who must be legitimate tricycle franchise holders, are required to submit the standard OR/CR, NBI clearance, and police clearance. The driver should have a smart phone.

Both Guico and Barot said only minute details of the operation need to be finalized, such as the booking fee.

The soft launch began in the morning with a short program in front of the municipal hall. It was followed by a motorcade along Poblacion and Sta. Maria road and back to the municipal hall for the closing program.]

PN vessel joins sea sub-phase of ASEAN China maritime exercise

By Priam Nepomuceno (PNA)

MANILA -- The sea sub-phase of the first-ever ASEAN China Maritime Exercise (ACMEX) formally began on Thursday as the Philippine Navy’s (PN) representative, BRP Dagupan City (LS-551), along with seven other participating naval vessels, sailed out to the drill area in Zhiangjiang.

Commander Sherwin E. Respeto, Naval Task Force 88 commander, said this phase aims to execute all plans drafted, deliberated, and finalized to test the cohesiveness, effectiveness, and seamless communication among multi-lateral force partners in the conduct of various scenarios, such as communication drills, and ship group formations.

"Joint search-and-rescue, cross heli(copter) deck landings and replenishment-at-sea approaches (will be held) in accordance with the Code of Unplanned Encounters at Sea (CUES)," he added.

Each of the scenarios shall be led by different participating countries with BRP Dagupan City to lead the replenishment-at-sea exercise.

"The ACMEX’s sea sub-phase provides an avenue for the PN to evaluate and validate the inter-operability and readiness of its assets and further enhance its capabilities to multi-lateral level," Respeto said.

BRP Dagupan City and the 200-man contingent aboard left Sangley Point, Cavite last Oct. 17, arriving in Zhiangjiang, China on October 20.

ACMEX 2018, which started on Oct. 21 and will end on Oct. 28, is hosted by the People's Republic of China and Republic of Singapore Navy.

BRP Dagupan City has a displacement of 4,265 tons at full load, measures 273 ft. long, has a draft of 12 ft. and a top speed of 12 knots. It was commissioned in PN service during the 1990s.

Philippine defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong earlier said the proposal for a joint ASEAN and Chinese naval exercise was submitted during the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting in Singapore last February.

Buskowitz installs 4,000 solar panels in Pangasinan mall

By Meanne Rosales

Local solar company Buskowitz launched its first and biggest commercial solar PV system which includes 4,000 solar panels generating 1.1 MW of energy in San Carlos Town Center (SCTC) in Pangasinan.

SCTC owner Mike Guico said they wanted to utilize solar as their source of power in their company for some time.

“But we didn’t want to do so until we found a company that is straightforward and easy to talk with, which is what we found with Buskowitz,” he said.

San Carlos City Mayor Joseres S. Resuello lauded the partnership of Buskowitz and San Carlos to provide clean and greener energy to Pangasinan mall-goers.

“On behalf of the City Government of San Carlos, it is with great pride and honor to convey our heartfelt recognition and warmest felicitations to the management of San Carlos Town Center for doing their exemplary share in protecting our environment by setting to install more than 4,000 solar panels in their pristine establishment through the Buskowitz Energy, the equivalent of 1.1 MW or 1,100 KW peak.”

This partnership made SCTC the first and biggest commercial solar powered in the entire region.

The installation will produce the same amount of electricity to power 184 homes for one year, saving the equivalent of 176 hectares of Philippine forests annually. It will also save 1.3M pounds of coal from being burned, the equivalent of 138,428 gallons of gasoline.

“Clean, renewable, and sustainable energy is what is going to drive the Philippines forward both in terms of the economy and the protection of the environment, and Buskowitz is really glad to have been involved in such a great project in Pangasinan that not only benefits its environment, but also hopefully encourages other businesses and individuals to make the switch for themselves,” said Buskowitz CEO James Buskowitz.

Pangasinan had its first solar installation a few years back when it installed solar light posts at the City Plaza and street lights along Palaris Street, Plaza Jaycee, and Rizal Avenue.

Fisherfolk receive bamboos for construction of fish cages

By Verdelle De Vera(/CIO, Sunday Punch)
BALON DAGUPAN NEWS

THE Dagupan City government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) distributed 3,825 pieces of bamboo to some 51 fisherfolk from the Samahan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda sa Dagupan City (SMalManDaCi) during a brief ceremony on October 15.

The recipients were from barangays Calmay (Talaib), Carael (Talaib) and Lucao (Tokoc) whose illegal structures were taken down during a massive demolition last August but have shown their compliance by availing of licenses and permits from the city government.

Each beneficiary received 75 pieces of bamboo that would enable them to build fish cages with a standard size of 7x10m as stipulated in the amended fishing ordinance in the city.

The distribution of bamboos was a continuation of a previous turnover ceremony on October 10, where the same recipients already received nets, ropes and other materials necessary for new fish cages.

More than P1.2M worth of materials were given to this batch of fisherfolk as part of DOLE’s Sustainable Livelihood Assistance Program.

With the continuous support coming from both local and national government, the fisherfolk will now be able to start anew with their livelihood, said City Agriculture Officer Emma Molina.

The City Agriculture Office is working for another project assistance that will benefit fisherfolk and their families.

SMC unit to expand Pangasinan hydropower plant capacity to 1,200 MW

By Lenie Lectura

STRATEGIC Power Development Corp. (SPDC), the independent power producer administrator (IPPA) of the 345-megawatt San Roque power plant in Pangasinan, wants to expand the power capacity of the hydro facility to 1,200 MW.

SPDC is a unit of SMC Global Power Holdings Corp., the power business of conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC).

“We have already planned this. After we pay PSALM [Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp.], we can now convert San Roque to pump hydro and produce 1,200MW,” SMC President Ramon S. Ang said.

On December 15, 2009, SPDC successfully bid for the appointment to be the IPPA for the San Roque power plant and received a notice of award on December 28, 2009. SPDC assumed administration of the power facility on January 26, 2010, in accordance with an IPPA agreement with PSALM.

SPDC is set to take over the 345-MW hydroelectric multipurpose power project in 2024.

Ang encouraged investors to put up more renewable-energy projects. “Filipinos should put up more pump hydro and battery storage. In some areas, you can put up wind and solar,” he added.

In August last year, SPDC announced plans to build a 500-MW pumped storage hydro project in Tarlac province.

In May last year, the Department of Energy (DOE) approved three hydro-power projects of SMC. These are the 100-MW Nabuangan run-of-river hydro in Apayao, 500-MW Dingalan pumped storage hydroelectric plant in Aurora and the 400-MW San Roque Lower East Pumped Storage in Pangasinan.

Ang also intends to install battery-energy storage possibly in all of its power facilities. “The idea is to put as many as possible.”

Last July, Ang said the power business vows to “heavily” invest in the renewable-energy sector of up 10,000 MW. “We are going to heavily invest in hydro, wind, tidal and battery storage. We predict to invest up to 10,000MW in the next 10 years,” Ang said.

Pangasinan residents enjoy 20-50% discounts at Hundred Islands

(PhilStar Wire Service, Sunday Punch)

ALAMINOS CITY— The city government is offering huge discounts to Pangasinan residents when they visit the Hundred Islands.

Residents can enjoy a 50 percent discount in the registration and environmental fees and another 20 percent discount on the use of island facilities run by the city government, effective last Oct. 8.

The new discount policy was authorized by the city council “in furtherance of the thrust of the city government to vigorously promote tourism, stimulate local growth and revenue.”

Alaminos City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Pangasinan being the home of the famous Hundred Islands National Park.

Residents only need to present government-issued or company ID, electric or water bill, school ID as proof of residence who like to avail of the promo.

The promo is good for day tour only.

Mayor Arthur Celeste said the city government is in support of “Pasyar ed Pangasinan (Travel Pangasinan),” tourism project that showcases the best of the best in the province.

Mike Sison, Alaminos City Tourism Officer, said the regular P100 registration fee includes entrance, environmental and insurance but Pangasinan residents will only pay P50.

The 20 percent discount will be applied on rental and use of facilities like tables, chairs, cottages, zipline, kayaking among others, he added.

The tourism office reported a drop in the number of visitors to the Hundred Islands in July and August because of the monsoon rains and typhoons and gale warning and the travel ban by boats imposed during those periods.

Sison encouraged Pangasinenses to visit destinations in the province before they explore tourism spots abroad.

Dagupan fisherfolk get support from DOLE

(Sunday Punch, With report from CIO/VDV)

THE owners and operators of demolished illegal fish pens and other structures in Dagupan City received P1.2 million worth of materials for the construction of fish cages as their alternative legitimate livelihood.

The support was provided by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

City Agriculturist Emma Molina said the city government requested DOLE for support after the demolition of the illegal structures in the river last August.

The beneficiaries will also receive bamboos in addition to the nets, ropes and other materials that were turned over.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) also donated 677 packs of relief goods for fisherfolk in ten barangays registered under the city’s Aquaculture Lease Agreement (ALA), who were also directly affected by Typhoon “Ompong”.

By James A. Loyola

Manila Water Philippine Ventures, Inc. (MWPV), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Manila Water Company, Inc., has been given the green light to start a P742 million water supply and septage management project in San Fabian Pangasinan.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, Manila Water said MWPV has received a Notice to Proceed from the Municipality of San Fabian.

This comes after the enactment by the Municipality of “An Ordinance Granting Manila Water Philippine Ventures, Inc. a Franchise to Establish, Construct, Operate, Manage, Repair, and Maintain Water Supply System and Facilities, and the Provision of Septage Management in the Municipality of San Fabian, Pangasinan.”

The Municipality of San Fabian is located North East of Calasiao in the Province of Pangasinan, where Manila Water has a Concession Agreement with the Calasiao Water District.

The franchise granted to MWPV shall be for a term of 25 years with an assumed billed volume of 12.6 million liters of water per day MLD by the end of the franchise period. The project is expected to be operational by 2019.

Just last week, MWPV also received the Notice of Award from Tanauan Water District (TWD) for the implementation of their joint venture for a P1.51 billion water supply and sanitation project.

This calls for the design, improvement, upgrade, rehabilitation, and expansion of water supply and sanitation facilities, including the financing and construction of such facilities and infrastructure in the service area of the TWD.

It also includes the management, operation and maintenance of water supply and sanitation facilities and the provision of the services necessary or incidental thereto in the TWD’s service area.

Anti-measles immunization launched in Pangasinan

By Liwayway Yparraguirre (PNA)

ROSALES, Pangasinan -- The Department of Health (DOH) office in Region 1 (Ilocos region) encouraged parents to avail of immunization for their children during the launching of the Phase 2 of Ligtas Tigdas Supplemental Immunization Activity Plus 2018 at SM City here on Sunday.

Dr. Maria Wilda Silva, National Immunization Program (NIP) National Program Manager from DOH central office, said they chose the mall as the launch venue to take the opportunity to explain not only to the captured audience, but also mall-goers from Pangasinan and nearby towns of Tarlac the importance of immunization to the children.

Silva said vaccinations against measles started in 1963, in 1969 for rubella, 1997 for mumps, and 1963 for the oral polio vaccine.

She said polio in the Philippines was eliminated since year 2000, but there is a threat of possible outbreak because of what happened in Papua New Guinea and Lao People's Democratic Republic.

"We've eliminated polio and don't want it back. For Hepatitis B, we have a program in which we call on all birthing centers and midwives that the Hepa birth dose must be given to the newborn child within 24 hours. If this is administered correctly and given to the child within the right time, vertical transmission is prevented," she added.

Silva said there are a lot of vaccines preventing diseases hence, the DOH is building again the trust and good relationship between the community and the vaccinators.

“It's not looking good, the number of children who are brought to the health centers for vaccines decreased. The usual reasons are: because of dengvaxia controversy, parents got scared of immunization for their children, both parents are working and the child is left to a babysitter who can’t decide whether to immunize the child during mobile immunization programs, (and) there are still misconceptions such as allow the measles to break out before immunizing the child, what they do not know is the child might die due to complications,” she said.

She added that anti-polio vaccine is being given to children aged 0 to 59 months, while the measles vaccine is being administered to children aged six months to 59 months.

In Region 1, there were three confirmed measles cases in 2017, of which two were from La Union province and one from Pangasinan.

There were no reported casualties.

In 2018, a total of 29 cases have been recorded.

Silva told the parents that the immunization or vaccination is free.

"Tayo ay nagtatrabaho ng husto para ang ating budget sa bakuna ay tuloy-tuloy na maibibigay ng pamahalaan (We are working hard for our budget, so that the immunization program of the government will continue,)," she said.

Silva led the ceremonial polio and measles vaccination to a number of children present during the launch, while others would receive the vaccines at their respective Rural Health Units.

Pangasinan town wins in Digital Cities PH awards

By Hilda Austria (PNA)

BAYAMBANG, Pangasinan --The municipality of Bayambang won the first place in Best in eGov Systems for Global Competitiveness (G2W), second place in Best in eGov Digital Finance Empowerment (P2G), and third place in the Best in eGov Customer Empowerment (G2C) in the recent Digital Cities Philippines awards.

Municipal Information and Communications Technology (ICT) head Carmela Atienza-Santillan, in an interview Monday, said they won the G2W award for their motorized tricycle operators permit system with e-tagging technology.

“Here in our town, illegal tricycles were lessened because of the technology we use. Through the radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, traffic enforcers use a handheld reader to detect violations such as unregistered tricycle, among others,” she said.

Santillan said the municipality’s P2G award is for the Integrated Local Government Unit System, which ensures that the available technologies are being used to serve better the residents of the town.

“The third place for the G2C award was because of the Bayambang Emergency Response System or the #4357. It’s like 911, wherein people in our town needing assistance because of emergency cases can be attended to immediately through this hotline,” she said.

Bayambang is the only municipality in Region 1 (Ilocos region) that joined the competition for digital cities in the country.

“The Quiambao-Sabangan administration's (incumbent) vision to make Bayambang a smart town, so these awards inspired us to strive harder than ever to attain our goal,” she said.

The recognition was accepted by Santillan and other municipal officials during the Digital Cities PH Awards–Best Practices in eGovernance for LGUs Awards Night at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City on Oct.12.

The eGov Awards for Excellence in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) on Good Governance for Local Government Units is a program of the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines to recognize best ICT practices of the local government units, said Santillan.

Meanwhile, Alaminos City was also awarded second place in the Best in eGov Data-Driven (D2G) National Awards-City Category for its Barangay Health Workers Information System.

DOST introduces salt ionization tech in Pangasinan

By Ma. Cristina Arayata (PNA)

MANILA — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) launched the I-Salt project in Alaminos, Pangasinan, the introduction of a salt ionization technology for the town's salt makers.

In a recent interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA), DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Peña said there is a salt community in Alaminos that is looking forward to this technology.

He said the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) would teach this community about it.

"They are seeking for (assistance) in salt ionization. I met with 21 salt makers in the area," he said.

The I-Salt project is an iodized salt processing model and design that uses three technologies.

The DOST said these technologies are the saturated brine feed reservoir, spin dryer, and iodizing machine.

Saturated brine feed reservoir is an evaporating setup, which has a capacity of 300 liters per batch. This helps produce finer salt with higher purity.

Spin dryer was designed to reduce the moisture of salt. This can process up to 75 kilograms per batch of salt, even in humid and rainy conditions.

The agency added that reducing salt moisture is in accordance with the ASIN Law (Act of Salt Iodization Nationwide), which contributes to the elimination of iodine deficiency disorders through a cost-effective measure of salt iodization.

Salt will then be transferred to an iodizing machine, a portable screw-type machine, which is operated continuously with 750 kg per hour capacity. This machine infuses iodine to the salt.

Another DOST-attached agency, the DOST- Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), helped in the development of these technologies.

Meanwhile, dela Peña said he is happy with how the local government of Alaminos is adopting the technology.

"You will see there the cooperation between the DOST and the local government unit. They are very keen on adopting technology that will be appropriate for them," he said, adding that Alaminos has done many research and development (R&D) activities.

He visited Alaminos as part of the observance of the Regional Science and Technology Week.
