Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

Dagupan to integrate city’s history in Grade 3, 7 classes

By Ahikam Pasion (PNA)

DAGUPAN CITY – Grade 3 and 7 pupils in public schools here will soon study the history of Dagupan City as part of their curriculum, said Mayor Belen Fernandez of this city.

This developed as two new history books featuring Dagupan’s rich history were unveiled to the public during the celebration of the 71st Agew na Dagupan (Dagupan Day) on Wednesday.

The history modules, entitled Dagupan City History Module for Grade 3 and Grade 7 respectively, were created through a collaboration between the Dagupan City Historical Culture and Arts Commission and the Department of Education (DepEd) in this city, said Fernandez in an interview.

“This is to inspire the children to continue or even surpass what the former leaders have done for the city,” she said.

Each book contains eight chapters, with 270 pages of the city's history, from its Bacnotan (the first name of Dagupan) days, up to its 70th cityhood anniversary, Fernandez disclosed.

“The modules have some questions to be answered after each topic, to make sure that the children understood the lesson,” she said.

She added that the books, which were already approved by DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, will be reproduced to be used in public schools within the school year.

“I think the private schools here should also use it since they are also part of the city,” the mayor also said.

Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Secretary Francis Tolentino, who was the guest of honor and speaker during the program, lauded the integration of the city’s history to the curriculum of the pupils.

“This is the only city I know, which gives value to history, and I must say that you (Dagupenos) are lucky,” Tolentino said.

A mass oath-taking of the elected Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials was also conducted alongside the Agew na Dagupan celebration.

Waste-to-worth facility soon to rise in Dagupan City

By Ahikam Pasion (PNA)

DAGUPAN CITY — A USD 11-million facility that can convert solid wastes into diesel fuel and methane gas will soon be built in Barangay Bonuan Binloc here.

Mayor Belen Fernandez of this city, in an interview on Wednesday, said Sure Global company, which will build the facility for free, is now preparing the engineering documents following the groundbreaking ceremony held on June 18.

The waste-to-worth project was conceptualized in 2014 with the help of Procter and Gamble Philippines, which conducted a feasibility study back then.

“With this project, once and for all, we will be able to address the garbage disposal problem of our city, especially the garbage in our dumpsite,” Fernandez said.

She noted that the diesel fuel to be produced by the facility has the same quality as the one being sold in the market at present.

“Our city will spearhead the use of diesel fuel in our vehicles,” the mayor said.

Some 200 to 300 tricycle operators have agreed to retrofit their tricycles in order to use natural gas or methane gas for free as its enabling fuel, said Fernandez.

“They will not have problem using methane gas, for the facility is expected to operate for 20 years,” she said.

Fernandez expressed that the goal of the said project is for the city to become a model in recycling wastes.

“I do not promise but our goal is towards that. I am just glad that finally, our problem wastes will soon be useful,” she added.

FEATURE: Smokin’ hot, tinapa sarap

By Venus May H. Sarmiento (JNPD/VHS/PIA-1,Pangasinan)

ROSALES, Pangasinan (PIA) - Imagine a plate, eight feet in diameter, loaded with flavored rice and topped with salted eggs and hot ‘tinapa.’ This was the latest product showcased by the local government unit of Rosales right inside the SM City Mall.

Smoked fish or more popularly known as ‘tinapa’ is the One Town, One Product (OTOP) of Rosales, thus the concept of a Tinapa Festival that started four years ago.

And what better way to stage a Tinapa Festival than cooking a giant version and feeding it to the people!

Vice Mayor Harry Bernabe, who represented Mayor Susan Casareno, said the tinapa industry has been the livelihood of people in Rosales for over 50 years now. It started in Barangay Carmen West and has since spread to neighboring towns.

“LGU-Rosales plans to put up a processing center for our famous tinapa product,” Bernabe said during the town fiesta.

SM City Rosales Mall Manager Herald Eleria said the accommodation of the event in the mall is their commitment to support the OTOP of the town and a gesture of thanks for being the host of the said mall.

Eleria expressed his gratitude to the municipal government and vowed to support whatever activities the town will venture into.

The giant tinapa fried rice was made possible with 35 kilos of rice, three kilos of garlic, five kilos of tomatoes, one kilo of toasted garlic, 20 kilos of onion, 100 pieces of salted eggs, and 600 pieces of the famed Rosales tinapa.

The recipe was cooked by the Barangay Service Point Officers from the 37 villages of the town, Some 700 people partook of the tinapa rice at SM’s event center.

Pangasinan town to enforce environmental code starting July 1

By Hilda Austria (PNA)

MANGALDAN, Pangasinan -- The municipal government here will strictly implement its environmental code - covering the plastic ban, prohibition on improper garbage disposal, and garbage burning - starting July 1 .

In an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Tuesday, Waste Management Division focal person, Pedrito Rivera, said the environmental code or Municipal Ordinance No. ‎2017-106 with strict compliance with Republic Act No. 9003, was passed by the Sangguniang Bayan in May 2017.

The ordinance prohibits the use of "sando bags" and Styrofoam by individuals and establishments, said Rivera.

“It also prohibits improper garbage disposal and burning, which harm our environment,” he added.

Rivera acknowledged the need to fully implement the law, especially the plastic ban, “in order to reduce waste produced in our town, as well as protect the environment.”

He said the town collects five to six tons of residual wastes every week from Barangays Poblacion and Banaoang alone.

“We had a memorandum of agreement with Metroclark Solid Waste Management Corp., which collects the two barangays’ residual wastes. But we pay PHP25,600 for every bin of trash they collected. We are expecting that if we do not address this, more wastes will be produced,” Rivera said.

He further said that they are now conducting information dissemination, urging residents to use eco-bags or the traditional “bayong”.

“We allow establishments using biodegradable plastics as they claim, but these are subject to testing by the Department of Science and Technology to ensure that these are indeed environment-friendly products,” Rivera said.

Violators will be fined with PHP500 for first offense, PHP1,000 (second offense), and PHP2,500 (third and succeeding offenses) for individuals; and PHP1,500 (first offense), PHP2,000 (second offense), and PHP2,500 and revocation of business permit (third and succeeding offenses) for establishments.

Rivera said the Task Force Kalikasan created by the mayor will be in charge of the monitoring of the implementation of the ordinance.

“We are asking everyone to please cooperate and obey the law for this is for our own good in the long run,” he said.

BFAR-1 assures enough supply of bangus amid fish kill

By Ahikam Pasion

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan -- The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Ilocos region has assured enough supply of milkfish (bangus) for the whole region, including for export to other areas, despite the recent fish kill in the towns of Anda and Bolinao.

BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden, in an interview during a fisheries forum here on Wednesday, revealed that the total damages in the recent fish kill equate to only 0.7 percent of the entire production of the region in a year.

Domenden said the region is self-sufficient in bangus production, and can continue exporting to other places, especially in Metro Manila, as the region is 127-percent sufficient.

“While it’s true that 964 tons of losses are not a joke, it is only 20 percent of production of the 123 structures in said areas,” he said.

The recent fish kill in the towns of Anda and Bolinao, which resulted in the loss of 964 tons of milkfish, will not affect the bangus industry in the county, Domenden said.

Meanwhile, the BFAR plans to speak with Mayor Aldrin Cerdan of Anda and Mayor Arnold Celeste of Bolinao early next week regarding the fishpen moratorium.

“The BFAR has no police powers, so the local government unit has to take the reins in the enforcement,” said Domenden.

The moratorium includes a plan or relocation or spotting for an alternative mariculture area, ideally within the Lingayen Gulf.

BFAR also suggested the use of rope frame cases as a way of modifying the fish cages.

“A more permanent solution would be removing the structures blocking the flow of water, so that waste materials would not settle underneath,” Domenden said.

As of 2016, BFAR has detected three meters of muck (waste materials) under the waters of Caquiputan Channel.

Pangasinan town cleans up coastal areas

By Cesar Ramirez (The Philippine Star)

SAN FABIAN, Pangasinan, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) led other government agencies, students and volunteers in a coastal clean-up of the beaches in this town early on the last day of May.

Raymundo Gayo, provincial environment and natural resources office (PENRO) chief, told reporters that the activity was in celebration of the 16th Month of the Ocean.

Gayo said this was in support of cleaning the beaches, oceans, rivers and other bodies of waters.

He said this was part of their advocacy being the lead agency in protecting the environment and natural resources to benefit the people.

Gayo said they chose the beaches in this town because San Fabian is one of the most frequented by local tourists.

He said that they are coordinating with the local government unit (LGU) as well other agencies like the Department of Tourism (DOT) for concerns in protecting the area.

He said a no-parking policy has been instituted on the beach while they discuss with LGU officials a review and of various concerns.

Aside from parking ban on coastal areas, he said they will also determine if the location of cottages complies with the law and if there is a need to study proper wastewater disposal.

Meanwhile, Gayo also said that have served notice of violations to some residents and businesses occupying foreshore areas.

NGCP reaches out to 1,550 pupils

By Eva Visperas (Sunday Punch)
GAMIT NI BULILIT PROGRAM

THE National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), under its “Gamit ni Bulilit” program, distributed anew 1,550 sets of school supplies to Grades 1 to 3 pupils in 11 schools Pangasinan on May 21-23.

Melma Concepcion Batario, NGCP’s Regional Communications and Public Affairs lead specialist, said the beneficiaries are pupils in San Bonifacio Elementary School, Sto. Domingo Elementary School, San Roque Elementary School, all in San Manuel town; Asingan North Central School and Bantog Elementary School in Asingan town; Sta. Rita Elementary School and Bacnit Elementary School in Mabini town; Maliga Elementary School in Alaminos City; Malimpin Elementary School; Macalang Elementary School and Petal Elementary School in Dasol town.

“Gamit ni Bulilit” is a yearly project that supports Grades 1 to 3 pupils in public schools in NGCP’s host communities throughout the country.

The NGCP said many of the families of the school children from the target schools do not have the means or capacity to buy their own supplies.

NGCP helps the situation by distributing school bags, each with 10 notebooks, pencils, and other supplies which can be used throughout the year.

This year NGCP reached out to 120,000 Grades 1 to 3 pupils in 400 schools nationwide: 166 schools in North Luzon, 55 in South Luzon, 81 in Visayas, and 98 in Mindanao.

“We focused our program on children from the lower grade levels on the idea that educational motivation is most effective during a child’s formative years,” NGCP said.

It added that fostering interest in learning at an early age will keep the children invested in their education and increase the chances of their staying in school. NGCP hopes that the children will be inspired to eventually finish their education.

During the distribution of school supplies, the young children were also introduced to the basic concepts of transmission line safety.

They were given age-appropriate lectures and materials on the do’s and don’ts around transmission lines and facilities and on anti-pilferage. Notebooks and coloring books with this safety theme are among the materials distributed.

NGCP is a Filipino-led, privately owned company in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country’s power grid, led by majority shareholders Henry Sy, Jr. and Robert Coyiuto, Jr.

Pangasinan police deploys 2,100 personnel for classes opening

By Hilda Austria (PNA)

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan -- Pangasinan police has deployed 2,102 personnel in all public schools in the province as classes opened on Monday.

Police Chief Insp. Norman Florentino, head of the Police Community Relations of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPO), in an interview, said the flag raising ceremony of the public schools in the province, which marked the opening of classes, was led by the policemen.

“We have deployed more policemen on schools with bigger population and assistance desk were in place. We also assist in the traffic regulation,” he said, noting the number represents 90 percent of its total workforce of 2,355.

The PPO has implemented the “Adopt a Pedestrian Lane Project” and the “Used Tires Can Save a Life Project”, wherein the police painted faded pedestrian lanes and made traffic signage from old tires, which were donated to their chosen school recipient, said Florentino.

“We are after the security and safety of everyone, especially the students when they cross the roads,” he added.

Florentino also encouraged the students, parents and teachers to take advantage of their assistance desk for any need that might arise during the first week of the opening of classes.

“So far, we have not yet recorded any untoward incidents,” he disclosed.

PPO will also conduct lectures on Anti-Bullying and Anti-Drug Abuse campaigns for the students, he said.

Pangasinan’s Langiran Lake eyed as tourist spot

By Hilda Austria (PNA)

BAYAMBANG, Pangasinan -- The municipal tourism office here has set its sight on turning the four-hectare Langiran Lake in Barangay Langiran here into a tourist spot to be called “Fishyalan”.

The development of the area is seen as a way to help the community’s indigent residents, said Rafael Saygo, senior municipal tourism operations officer, on Saturday.

Saygo said the lake, which caught the interest of Mayor Cesar Quiambao last year, has a lot of potentials because of the interesting folklores behind it, as well as its agricultural value.

He said Langiran residents, from generation to generation, have claimed that the lake conceals an underwater chapel and the cross on its steeple can sometimes be seen.

“We tried to verify this tale but the divers cannot really go deeper because it seems to have a quicksand underneath,” Saygo said in an interview.

Nonetheless, the lake is also abundant with fresh water that never runs out even during the El Niño weather phenomenon, even though it is not connected to any body of water nor is it near any body of water, as claimed by the residents, he added.

“For a long time, we thought it is just a creek or an excavated land that accumulated water, but BFAR (Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources) confirmed it is a lake,” Saygo said.

“When the mayor saw this lake and learned about its abundance of water, he took it into consideration. This is one of the proposed projects of the mayor to fight poverty as we are under revolution against poverty. The idea is to put up fish cages and develop the area,” he said.

Phase 1 of the site development began last year with a PHP1.2-million funding from the municipal government, Saygo said, adding that some 10 fish cages with more than 200,000 fingerlings of tilapia and other breeds of fresh water fish have been placed on the lake with the help of BFAR.

“We have also submitted a proposal to the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority and we are waiting for their approval,” Saygo said.

He said the idea is for the tourists to fish and the residents to cook or grill the catch, since “we are known as the Longest Barbecue Grill Guinness Record holder, and we also want to put up an event center, cottages and zipline.”

He added that they also coordinated with BFAR for additional fish cages.

“We target 12 or more fish cages, so we could harvest on a monthly basis. BFAR will also help us establish our own nursery, so we need not buy fingerlings or request from them. BFAR also trained some of the personnel from the municipal agriculture office who will handle the nursery,” Saygo said.

He said the presence of the lake has rekindled the town’s interest in the fishery industry.

Pangasinan regaining pride in cycling

By Hilda Austria (PNA)

MANGALDAN, Pangasinan -- Pangasinenses have regained dominance in cycling, said two-time Tour of Luzon champion Jessie Garcia Jr. following the recent victory of his town mate El Joshua Carino, in the Le Tour de Filipinas international cycling competition.

Garcia, now 72, retired from competitive cycling on 1993 and presently works as a sports journalist in Sunday Punch and sports correspondent to Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan.

Nonetheless, his sharp memory on the track record of the legendary victories of Pangasinan cyclists remains intact.

He recalled that on 1955, Tour of Luzon was first held traversing the Manila to Vigan route, which was dominated by Antonio Arzala from Laguna.

“It was Rufino Gabot from Manaoag who was the first Pangasinense to win the eight-day Tour of Luzon in 1957,” he said.

The winning streak remained in Pangasinan in the following years.

Garcia was still able to name the Pangasinense cycling champs in the Tour of Luzon and other national and international competitions; Mamerto Eden of Mapandan (1958); Edmundo De Guzman of Lingayen (1962); Gonzalo Recodes of Manaoag (1963); Teodorico Rimarim of Basista (1974); Samson Carino of Mangaldan (Tour of Picca 1975); Samson Etrata of Binalonan (Tour of Luzon 1975); Modesto Bolzo of Sual (1976); Jacinto Sicam of San Manuel (1981 and 1982); Romeo Bolzo of Sual (1983); Ruben Carino of Mangaldan (1984); Pepito Calip of Binalonan (1985) and Bernardo Llentada of San Nicolas (1991).

It was after a decade when Pangasinan recovered the championship title through Wilfredo Calosa of San Jacinto (2001); followed by Santy Barmachea of Umingan (2002, 2006, 2011, 2015); Arnel Quirimit of Pozorrubio (2003); and Baler Ravina of Asingan (Le Tour de Filipinas 2012).

Garcia was the champion in 1973 and 1977’s Tour of Picca and Tour of Luzon.

Additions to the roster were Ronald Oranza of Villasis, who recently won the Ronda Filipinas, and Carino for Le Tour de Filipinas this year.

In fact, Pangasinan still holds the record of 1:12:51 for a 36-kilometer ride from La Union to Baguio in the person of Pepito Calip.

“A total of 21 champions are from Pangasinan, followed by Manila with only six champs,” said Garcia.

He believes that the Pangasinense cyclists’ edge over the others is the training both in levelled area and uphill climbs since the province is 66.99 kilometers away from Baguio City, training ground for competitive cyclists.

“I always advise the cyclists, even El Joshua, to train hard on the uphill terrain because there a cyclist can develop his endurance and stamina among others,” Garcia said, adding “sprinter sa patag yan pero ang mountain climbing challenge, mahalaga yan para magchampion. (Levelled cycling is for sprinters, but mountain climbing challenge is important to achieve championship).”

He also noted the importance of discipline and good nutrition, aside from rigid and scientific training, which he himself practices.

“Early to bed, early to rise, that’s what I do. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. Hanap ng pagkain na tugma sa katawan (Look for food that matches your body type). Mine is mongo, bulalo and black beans,” he added.

Garcia admitted that cycling is a risky sport, with a number of cyclists got involved in road accidents, but he stressed that the risk is part of the game.

Although already retired, Garcia continues to organize cycling events all over the province and has already numbered 213 since 1974.

He lauded the support of the provincial government under the leadership of Governor Amado Espino III and the former governor Amado Espino Jr.

“It is inspiring for us (cyclists) if our government leaders support the sport, which brought and continue to bring honor to our province,” Garcia said.

By Hilda Austria (PNA)

MANGALDAN, Pangasinan — A total of 30 incoming high school freshmen have passed the qualifying examination for the scholarship program in this town.

Ernie Cuison, media coordinator in an interview Wednesday, said the scholars will be receiving PHP1,000 a month for the whole school year until their 12th grade.

“But they need to maintain 85 percent general average, lest they will forfeit their scholarship for the succeeding month, they will only be entitled again if they reach the maintaining grade,” Cuison said.

He said the scholars, who have taken the qualifying exam last April 26, are poor but deserving students.

“Only those who are indigent but are hardworking and intelligent students can avail of this scholarship program,” he said.

He stressed that the Municipal Planning and Development Council have checked the background of the students.

The town now has a total of 210 high school students-scholars from 2013 up to present under the administration of Mayor Bonafe Parayno.
