'''Pandan, an Asian Herb, Leaps From Cakes to Cocktails'''
*Source:https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/24/dining/cocktails-pandan-france.html?_r=0
:By ROBERT SIMONSON
Pandan, a tropical herb, is a versatile thing. In its native Southeast Asia — where it is prized for an unusual aroma that is compared variously to nuts, rice and popcorn — it is used in desserts, sweets and some savory dishes.
Half a world away, however, it has become a hot ingredient at French cocktail bars.
That culinary and geographical leap can largely be credited to Nico de Soto, a globe-trotting bartender and an owner of Mace in New York and Danico in Paris. “I discovered pandan while traveling in Indonesia for two months in 2008,” he said. “They use it a lot to perfume the rice, or in various cakes and candies, the same way we use vanilla, I would say.”
Mr. de Soto started using it for an event in 2010 in London, then on the menu at the Experimental Cocktail Club on the Lower East Side. A pandan cocktail has been on every menu at Danico since it opened last year, and at Mace.
“Some people can’t put out a menu without ginger or mint,” Mr. de Soto said. “I’m the pandan guy.”
Today, you can find pandan cocktails at several Parisian cocktail bars. At Mabel, the Electric Crusta contains Calvados infused with Szechuan buttons, pandan syrup, bergamot Curaçao, blood-orange juice and bitters. At Sherry Butt, the Ronin uses Madeira that has been infused with pandan. At Dirty Dick, the Asian Persuasion includes the bitter aperitif Suze infused with black lemon, along with pandan syrup, passion fruit and pineapple rum.
Bartenders are eager to credit Mr. de Soto as their inspiration. “If somebody out here is known for being the spokesperson for pandan, it is definitely Nicolas,” said Joseph Akhavan, a founder of Mabel. “He has been obsessed with pandan for so long now.”
Pandan lends a pretty green tint to many drinks. But it is the lingering, nutty flavor that bewitches bartenders and drinkers. “It has an unexpected finish that makes you want to go for another sip,” Mr. Akhavan said.
That taste makes it well suited for tiki drinks, said Scott Schuder, an owner of Dirty Dick, noting that it added a “unique hazelnut, rice, coconut flavor.”
Pandan is found in bars outside Paris as well, including Bordeaux and Lyon. When Simon Chollet, who worked at Sherry Butt, opened Symbiose in Bordeaux in 2015, he took pandan with him. Mr. Chollet noted the ingredient’s many advantages: It is simple to work with, inexpensive and easy to acquire. “You can find it in France in almost every Asian shop,” he said.
The leaf also helped the bar introduce wary Bordeaux patrons to the potential delights of the modern cocktail. “It was for us the perfect way to explain to our first customer that drinking cocktails is more than just a trendy thing,” Mr. Chollet said. “It is an experience of taste and a way to discover other continents and cultures.”
Some bartenders predict that 2017 will be an even bigger year for pandan. Pandan cocktails can now be found at Slowly Shirley in Manhattan and 71 Above in Los Angeles.
“Now people tag me everywhere in the world when they use pandan,” Mr. de Soto said. “It’s pretty funny: Paris, Hamburg, Montreal, New York or Sydney. I should have bought shares in a plantation in the Philippines.”

'''Grocery Ninja: Pandan, the Asian Vanilla'''
*Source:http://www.seriouseats.com/2008/11/pandan-the-asian-vanilla.html
:By Wan Yan Ling
Before I knew vanilla, I knew pandan. Mind-boggling, I realize, but I was well into my teenage years before I set eyes (and greedy hands) on a plump vanilla bean, whereas my family had a pandan plant growing right at our doorstep. In fact, the corridor we shared with our neighbors was lined with pots of it—Southeast Asian cooks use pandan leaves to scent their dishes so frequently that it would be unthinkable to not have any on hand.
Also called screwpine, pandan (like vanilla) lends itself to both sweet and savory dishes. One of my earliest tasks as mom’s kitchen helper was to run to the door, pluck a handful of pandan leaves, and rinse the dirt off them for her “meez.” Mom would tie the leaves in a big knot and toss them into her pot, use them to line steamer baskets, wrap them around meat for grilling, or pound them with a mortar and pestle to extract their sweet, faintly grassy, emerald green essence. From plain, steamed rice and rich chicken curries to light-as-air chiffon cakes and wobbly jellies, pandan would add an unmistakable, wonderfully fragrant note to the dishes.
Taste being 75 percent smell, I associate the “taste” of vanilla with that of cream and sugar – the ingredients used most frequently to tease out vanilla’s floral-woody scent. Similarly, I tend to associate the “taste” of pandan with that of coconut milk – an ingredient it marries remarkably well with. Once cooked, the hint of grass vanishes, leaving behind a subdued, lightly floral fragrance. Just because it’s light doesn’t mean it lacks punch though. This fragrance is so distinct and carries so pleasingly on the soft, tropical breeze, that local bakeries always have a waffle iron going at their door, churning out stacks of piping hot pandan waffles. (My fondest memories of high school involve heeding its siren call with my friends – following our noses to the bakery during breaks and ordering a waffle apiece. For a dollar, you walk away with a perfectly crisp, buttery specimen, trying not to burn your hands and lips in your eagerness to wolf it down. And for a few cents more, the waffle lady will slather on generous lashings of creamy peanut butter, nutella, or kaya – to push it just that little bit further off the bliss meter).
I like to think of pandan as the everyman’s vanilla. Inexpensive and readily accessible (even if you have black thumbs, they’re usually thrown into your bag gratis by the vegetable seller at the market), pandan is the proletarian worker to vanilla’s bourgeoisie. You may not be in Southeast Asia, California, or Florida (where the plant thrives), but the frozen leaves can usually be found in Asian groceries, and the bottled stuff – pandan paste and pandan essence—work just as well. I wouldn’t rush to replace the fresh leaves in its lightest of preparations—in clear, Cantonese dessert soups or tong sui, for instance – but everything else (rice cooked with coconut milk, gluten-free kuih muih, the green, chewy, squiggles in Indonesian cendol) is fair game. And, if you’re still unconvinced by my unabashed ode to pandan, Vosges – that maker of incredible Haut Chocolat – has released a sublime pandan ice cream in its Hautes Glaces collection. And everyone knows they can do no wrong.
About the author: Wan Yan Ling can usually be found in the kitchen procrastinating on "real work" or online tracking down obscure recipes. Ling thinks eating alone is no fun, and she still believes in hand-mixing.

'''Rampe or Pandan – A Medicinal and Aromatic Plant in Southeast Asia'''
*Source:http://www.slguardian.org/2016/08/rampe-or-pandan-a-medicinal-and-aromatic-plant-in-southeast-asia/
:By Dr. Lalith Gunasekera
Plant Family: Pandanaceae
Botanical name: PANDANUS AMARYLLIFOLIUS
Common names: rampe (Sinhalese), ramba (Tamil), pandan (Spanish, Duch), umbrella tree, screw pine (English), pandan wangi (Malaysia).
(Queensland, Sri Lanka Guardian) Rampe is the only Pandanus species with scented leaves. The sweet smell of freshly harvested leaves is similar to the fragrant of expensive Indian basmati, Thai Jasmine or Japanese kaorimai rice. The origin of Rampe remains a mystery and controversy because there is only one report of a male flowering specimen, none of a female and the species seems not to be known in the wild. Today its distributed in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore and Western New Guinea.
Rampe is a medicinal and aromatic plant that grows upright with narrow blade leaves and woody aerial roots. The plant has two distinct growth forms. If the plant leave undisturbed, it develops into a small tree with usually unbranched, palm like stem and large leaves (up to 2 m long and 7-9 cm wide). If leaves are continuously harvested, it will instead acquire a low, shrubbier form with smaller leaves (25- 75 cm long and 2-5 cm wide) and without a visible trunk. This small growth form is favoured by ever wet tropical climate, but can slowly revert into the large growth form if left undisturbed. No one has ever captured the evidence of its whole inflorescence (flowers) or fruits. The vegetative reproductive system of Rampe is believed to be a result of long term cultivation. It has not been discovered in the wild and only survives in domesticated conditions.
Rampe is mainly propagated by suckers or by stem cuttings. Suckers removed from leaf axils can be planted straight away or rooted first in a sandy medium. This species is available in some of the tropical plant nurseries in Queensland.
The rampe plant grows very well in tropical Queensland. The plant loves high rainfall, high humidity and year around warm temperatures. Leaves always used fresh (slightly wilted). The leave’s aroma is distinct and hard to describe, somewhat nutty, reminiscent to fresh hay and definitely pleasant. The scent of rampe leaves develops only on wilting. The fresh, intact plants hardly have any odour. On the other hand, dried rampe leaves lose their fragrance quite quickly. The flavour component of rampe leaves is not well investigated. It is speculated that the flavour is due to a volatile product of oxidative degradation of a yellow carotenoid pigment that forms only when the leaves withers.
:Uses:
Rampe leaves extract is a valuable antioxidant source and applicable in healthcare and food industry in South Asian region. It’s amazing as it is used in so many cultures in cooking including Sri Lankan, Indonesian, Singaporean, Filipono, Malaysian, Thai, Bangladeshi, Vietnamese, Chinese, South indian, Burmese and papua new guinea. '''Pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius)'''
*Source:http://garden-notes-from-hawaii.blogspot.com/2013/12/pandan-pandanus-amaryllifolius.html
: (Stellamarina, Garden Notes from Hawaii)
We have many kinds of big Pandanus trees in the Pacific Islands, so when I say I am using a Pandanus leaf as a herb or spice people immediately think of the 4 ft long leaves of the trees that are used to weave mats and baskets.......and they look at me funny.  I have to explain that Pandan is a mini sized Pandanus that would fit into their herb garden just fine.  A student from Malaysia introduced this plant to me and I have been growing it and using it for over ten years now.  It makes my common, California grown, rice give off  the lovely Jasmine rice smell when cooking and adds a nice subtle flavor to the rice as well.  Here in Hawaii, gourmet rices are becoming big time, with the rice shelves at the supermarket expanding greatly with all the fancy international choices.  Pandan makes my cheap rice taste like a gourmet rice.  It may be my imagination, but I think that the cooked rice does not go off so quick either if it has been cooked with Pandan.
The Pandan is a stalk like plant with long slender leaves of about 1- 1 1/2 ft. long.  After a while, the mature plant gives off little offshoots so that it becomes more of clump.  Mine has not grown higher than 3 ft.  As it matures, the plant bends down with the weight and sends out aerial roots to support it.  If you do not keep an eye on it, it could go expanding out in your garden so you do need to expect it to spread out somewhat.  However, if the clump is just taking up too much room, just break off some of the off shoots to give away as gifts or to root and pot up.  After about five years, I pulled up most of my Pandan and started again with  new rooted tops as the old clump was starting to look too messy and tangled.  I do love the fragrance of the Pandan in the garden on a humid or rainy day.
The Pandan does not flower......an indication that this plant has relied on man to reproduce it for thousands of  years.  Pandan will grow in sun or semi-shade.  It does like moist soil.  I have seen it grown in swampy areas in SE Asia, but is grows in my sandy soil OK although I do water it every few days.  I notice my plants leaf tips get burnt when the salt wind gets going but otherwise it does fine.  It has no disease problems except that I notice that slugs will eat the tender leaves of the baby off shoots when I pot them up if I leave the pots sitting on the ground.
To propagate new Pandan plants I pull off an off shoot/sucker from the mother plant and leave it standing in water for a few weeks until it starts rooting before I pot it up.  I change the water daily to keep it fresh and oxygenated.  I found this worked better than just potting up the off shoot straight away where it tended to rot and die.
Pandan is commonly grown throughout SE Asia as a herb/spice.  As I said, I add my Pandan leaves to ordinary rice to give it a subtle Jasmine rice flavor.  I suspect I may be getting added benefits of some plant goodness into my rice as well.  Some in SE Asia consider the plant to have medicinal qualities.
If you are familiar with Nasi Lemak from Malaysia, this is just rice cooked with coconut milk and a few leaves of Pandan.  The usual method is just to cut three leaves of Pandan, tie them together into a knot and throw them in the pot with the rice.  This makes for easy removal at the end of cooking.  Do not use the white part of the leaf at the base.  Leaves do keep quite well in the refrigerator.  Wrap them up in a damp cloth or paper towel and store them in a plastic bag.
You can buy bottles of Pandan essence in Asian stores.  They are usually bright green in color so I eye them suspiciously.  I think green food color has been added.  I ate Pandan bread  and Pandan mochi in Malaysia that was green in color.  To tell the truth, there was more green food coloring there too than any Pandan taste that I could detect.  In Thailand I bought small pieces of chicken wrapped in Pandan leaves and fried.  It was nice chicken but I could not taste any Pandan flavor.  More a unique way of presenting food.
On looking around the Internet I find recipes for making your own Pandan juice.  Just blend 6-8 leaves with 2/3 cup of water in a food processor and discard the solids to keep the liquid for cooking.  Or you can make a Pandan paste.  Boil 1" pieces of leaves in 1/2 a cup of water and then throw it all into a food processor and use the resulting paste to add to your cakes and desserts. This sounds better than buying those bright green bottles of Pandan essence at the store.  I think I will just be sticking to throwing a few leaves into my rice pot which has become a long time habit now.  Some Nasi Lemak goes over well too....

'''Natural Cures For Gout: Screwpine'''
*Source:http://hubpages.com/health/Natural_cures_for_gout_screwpine
:By Justin Choo
If you search the internet you would find numerous natural cures for gout. However, I didn’t come across this particular natural cure for gout that I am going to share with you here; screwpine. From my experience, I found that natural cures have a peculiar success rate. Certain people may find a particular treatment to be effective. But for others, for some strange reasons, this particular natural cure simply would not work for them. Maybe would it be that the different constituent make-up of different people responding differently to this natural cure? But then again, even medical "proven" methods do not work successfully on everyone either.
Natural cures for gout: What is gout?
Gout is a condition where there is an excess amount of uric acid in the body. Gout is a type of arthritis, or a form of rheumatic disease. Under normal conditions, the kidneys will be able to flush out the uric acid. Uric acid is formed when the body processes purine, a type of protein. Gout occurs when the excess uric acid accumulates in the joints and other tissues as crystals. Excess uric acid is caused by either the inability of the kidneys to flush it out and/or the body produces too much uric acid.
Over the years, the uric acid crystals will build up in the joints and the surrounding tissues forming large deposits called tophi which look like lumps under the skin especially near severely affected joints, fingers and toes. The most obvious symptoms are inflammation in the joints, and severe pain, especially in the evening. The other symptoms are loss of appetite, lack of sleep, presence of kidney stones, and even possible kidney failure.
Gout usually occurs in males over 40 years, and females following menopause. The pain usually comes in a sudden and may last for several days.
:Natural cures for gout : Causes
Unhealthy diet is the main culprit. Alcohol consumption, especially wine and beer, and intake of food with high purine, especially seafood like crabs, prawns, squids, fish roe, shellfish, and animal and fish innards. Red meat especially mutton should be avoided. Peas and beans should also be avoided. However, it is also found that gout may be due to genetics and is hereditary. If you are overweight and are not exercising, you will be in danger of having gout.
:Conventional gout treatment
There is apparently no permanent cure for gout. Medical treatment is by administering high doses of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen . Other common drugs being used are colchicine and allopurinal or probenecid.
Gout is a progressive ailment. If not treated properly, the painful attacks will become more severe and more frequent over time.
:Natural cures for gout : Natural remedies
You would have come across lots of natural remedies for gout. As I said before, some may prove effective for you. The most common remedies are:
:• Apple Cider Vinegar with honey.
:• Lemons and other fruits rich in Vitamin C.
:• Bananas, apples, black cherries, strawberries, tomatoes, green pepper and leafy green vegetables. (However, one of the readers has this comment:
:• • YL : "Strawberries and tomatoes are actually foods which are high in purines, and hence not recommended for people with gout.")
:• Drinking lots of water.
:• Gout and kidney stones
About 20 per cent of those suffering from gout, also have kidney stones. But don’t despair, there is a proven natural remedy to get rid of kidney stones. Please refer to my other article by CLICKING HERE.

:• What is screwpine
A little description on screwpine for those not familiar. Readers from temperate countries may not be familiar with this tropical plant. You can see the photo on top of this article. It was taken in my garden. Screwpine has very fragrant leaves. It is very easily grown in tropical countries. It is an essential cooking ingredient in Southeast Asian countries of Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Indo-China. It is known in various names. In Malaysia and Indonesia, it is called Pandan.

'''How to Plant Pandan '''
*Source:http://homeguides.sfgate.com/plant-pandan-103293.html
:By Jenny Harrington
Pandan plants (Pandanus spp.) grow as 15- to 20-foot-tall trees outdoors, or as tall houseplants. Two common varieties are screw pine (Pandanus utilius), which grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11, and variegated screw pine (Pandanus tectorius "Veitchii"), which grows in USDA zones 10 through 12. Plant pandans in late winter or early spring just before the evergreens awaken from semidormancy. Start new plants from cuttings at any time after the suckers begin to form.
:Outdoor Planting
Garden sites that receive full, all-day sun to partial afternoon shade make the best planting spots for pandans. Moist soil that retains moisture without becoming soggy results in the healthiest growth, although a pandan can tolerate some drought stress once it's established. Sites require minimal preparation before planting. Break up the soil to the depth of the root ball in an area twice as wide as the root. Plant the pandan at the same depth it was growing at in its nursery container. Water the plant thoroughly after planting so the soil settles in the planting hole and the soil is evenly moist throughout the root zone.
:Potted Plants
Container-grown plants require pots with bottom drainage holes to prevent the soil from staying soggy. Young plants grow well in smaller 10-inch-diameter containers, while more mature plants require a container deep enough to contain the roots and 2 to 4 inches wider in diameter than the root ball. Transplanting every two to three years, before the roots become crowded, leads to healthy growth. When planting or transplanting the pandan in the pot, fill the container one-third full with a standard potting soil or a soil mix formulated for tropical plants. Set the root ball on top the soil and fill in around it until the top of the root ball is just beneath the soil surface. A thorough watering after planting settles the soil around the roots.
:Propagation Methods
You can propagate a pandan from either cuttings or seeds. The plant produces suckers from its base, with each capable of growing into a new plant. Disinfect pots and tools by wiping them clean with isopropyl alcohol before planting. Cut the suckers from the plant with a disinfected knife and plant it in a container filled with moistened, sterile medium. Covering the pot with a clear plastic bag helps retain moisture, but the soil will require watering if it dries out. The suckers root in four to six weeks when they're left in bright but indirect sunlight. The seeds require soaking for 24 hours before planting in a moist medium and they can take two to three months to germinate, so cuttings provide a quicker propagation method.
:Initial Care
Temperatures below 55 degrees Fahrenheit can damage pandan plants and freezes will kill them. Container plants perform best indoors in a sunny, south-facing window, or you can place them outdoors in full sun during the summer. Water garden plants once a week when there is no appreciable rainfall, supplying 1 to 3 inches of water weekly or enough to keep the soil moist. Indoor plants need watering when the top 1 inch of soil begins to dry. Newly planted pandans do not require fertilizer, and they don't suffer from serious pest or disease problems.

Pandan, an Asian Herb, Leaps From Cakes to Cocktails

By ROBERT SIMONSON

Grocery Ninja: Pandan, the Asian Vanilla

By Wan Yan Ling

Rampe or Pandan – A Medicinal and Aromatic Plant in Southeast Asia

By Dr.

Uses:

Rampe leaves extract is a valuable antioxidant source and applicable in healthcare and food industry in South Asian region. It’s amazing as it is used in so many cultures in cooking including Sri Lankan, Indonesian, Singaporean, Filipono, Malaysian, Thai, Bangladeshi, Vietnamese, Chinese, South indian, Burmese and papua new guinea. The leaves of rampe are used either fresh or dried, and are commercially available in frozen form in Asian grocery stores in nations where the plant does not grow.

• Rampe leaves are widely using in South Asain culinary delights as food flavour and green colouring. Creatively in using rampe leaves to enhance cuisine attractiveness are notably in strait Chinese dessert. Famous daily meal with such as “Nasi Lemak” in Malaysia and “Nasi Kuning” in Indonesia are prepared by cooking the rice with coconut milk and rampe leaves.
• Leaves of rampe are widely used to flavour ordinary rice to resemblance expensive aromatic rice cultivars such as basmati and jasmine.
• Fried chicken wrapped in rampe leaves is a delicacy some South Asian communities.
• Rampe juice extract from the leaves are used for flavouring and colouring cakes.
• The dried leaves powder has been widely used in ice cream, yogurt, soup, tea and jam in Malaysia.
• Wide usage in food industry result in Geneva based International Standards Organisation (ISO) included rampe in the list of herbs and spices. Rampe essence has potential to become substitute to vanilla essence.
• Filipino cuisine uses rampe leaves as flavouring in fruit salad and rice based pastries and numerous sweet drinks and desserts.
• Rampe leaves appear more frequently in sweet puddings or custards based on sticky rice.
• Leaves are also used in some traditional medicine such as remedy for toothache and
• Useful for healing various wounds, leprosy and smallpox.
• Cure headache.
• Reduce fever, earache, arthritis, stomach spasms and more.
• Chewing rampe leaves helps to heel gum pain and bad breath.
• Useful for the treatment of several skin disorders.
• Useful for the preparation of various herbal teas.
• Rampe roots extracts are used to cure thyroid problems.
Growing as a landscaping plant

Rampa is a low growing plant with long narrow leaves and woody aerial roots. It can be grown as a marginal plant in dams and ponds and used as a bedding plant in tropical landscaping and be used to hold creek bank from erosion..

Pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius)

(Stellamarina, Garden Notes from Hawaii)

Aloha

Natural Cures For Gout: Screwpine

By Justin Choo

Natural cures for gout : Causes

Unhealthy diet is the main culprit. Alcohol consumption, especially wine and beer, and intake of food with high purine, especially seafood like crabs, prawns, squids, fish roe, shellfish, and animal and fish innards. Red meat especially mutton should be avoided. Peas and beans should also be avoided. However, it is also found that gout may be due to genetics and is hereditary. If you are overweight and are not exercising, you will be in danger of having gout.

Conventional gout treatment

There is apparently no permanent cure for gout. Medical treatment is by administering high doses of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen . Other common drugs being used are colchicine and allopurinal or probenecid.

Gout is a progressive ailment. If not treated properly, the painful attacks will become more severe and more frequent over time.

Natural cures for gout : Natural remedies

You would have come across lots of natural remedies for gout. As I said before, some may prove effective for you. The most common remedies are:

• Apple Cider Vinegar with honey.
• Lemons and other fruits rich in Vitamin C.
• Bananas, apples, black cherries, strawberries, tomatoes, green pepper and leafy green vegetables. (However, one of the readers has this comment:
• • YL : "Strawberries and tomatoes are actually foods which are high in purines, and hence not recommended for people with gout.")
• Drinking lots of water.
• Gout and kidney stones

About 20 per cent of those suffering from gout, also have kidney stones. But don’t despair, there is a proven natural remedy to get rid of kidney stones. Please refer to my other article by CLICKING HERE.

This plant has been found to contain several kinds of flavonoids which have anti-oxidant, anti-viral, anti-allergen, anti-platelet and anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids help to maintain healthy blood vessels and connective tissues. Flavonoids are also called bioflavonoids

How to Plant Pandan

By Jenny Harrington

Pandan plants (Pandanus spp.) grow as 15- to 20-foot-tall trees outdoors, or as tall houseplants. Two common varieties are screw pine (Pandanus utilius), which grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11, and variegated screw pine (Pandanus tectorius "Veitchii"), which grows in USDA zones 10 through 12. Plant pandans in late winter or early spring just before the evergreens awaken from semidormancy. Start new plants from cuttings at any time after the suckers begin to form.

Outdoor Planting

Garden sites that receive full, all-day sun to partial afternoon shade make the best planting spots for pandans. Moist soil that retains moisture without becoming soggy results in the healthiest growth, although a pandan can tolerate some drought stress once it's established. Sites require minimal preparation before planting. Break up the soil to the depth of the root ball in an area twice as wide as the root. Plant the pandan at the same depth it was growing at in its nursery container. Water the plant thoroughly after planting so the soil settles in the planting hole and the soil is evenly moist throughout the root zone.

Potted Plants

Propagation Methods

Initial Care

Temperatures below 55 degrees Fahrenheit can damage pandan plants and freezes will kill them. Container plants perform best indoors in a sunny, south-facing window, or you can place them outdoors in full sun during the summer. Water garden plants once a week when there is no appreciable rainfall, supplying 1 to 3 inches of water weekly or enough to keep the soil moist. Indoor plants need watering when the top 1 inch of soil begins to dry. Newly planted pandans do not require fertilizer, and they don't suffer from serious pest or disease problems.

2 PH women scientists awarded for novel research on ‘pandan’ and fungi

(Manila Times)

Two women scientists from the Philippines have received awards from international science research communities for their novel research work giving prominence to endemic plants.

In a recent press briefing, Maribel G. Nonato and Rizalina L. De Leon were presented by the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PhilAAST), headed by current Department of Science and Technology (DOST) secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña, as recipients of this year’s Gregorio Y. Zara Awards for Basic and Applied Research.

PhilAAST aims to promote more science and technology developments in the country through scientific and technological research that contribute to the knowledge stock and national development.

Dr. Nonato was conferred the Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Basic Research for her pioneering works on the Phytochemistry and biological activities of Philippine genus Pandanus (Family Pandanaceae) or better known as pandan plants.

Dr. De Leon was given the Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Applied Research for her bioethanol production using local varieties of fungi as alternative sources of ethanol additives replacing food-based crops such as corn.

Dr. Nonato, who is currently the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Santo Tomas, has spent years in doing groundbreaking research on pandan.

Prior to her research, there was little known information about pandan. Locally, 20 out of the 450 species of this monocot plant grow abundantly in the country. Ordinarily, pandan leaves are used by locals in preparing sweet delicacies and beverages due to its sweet aromatic scent.

In most occasions, you may find pandan leaf inside steamed rice pots.

In contrast, the closest the pandan has been considered as a herbal medicine was when the plant was included in pito-pito, a popular traditional herbal medicine concoction of seven endemic plants in the country used to relieve common illnesses.

In 1991, Dr. Nonato started her research focusing on the plant. She said she chose pandan because little is known about the plant.

“If you are starting on your research,” says Dr. Nonato. “Look for subjects that have little information so you can contribute to the development of new knowledge.”

She was fortunate to have initial talks with world-renowned Pandanus botanist Dr. Benjamin Stone who was then working with the National Museum on a project focusing on the inventory of Philippine medicinal plants.

But a turn of events almost stalled her research as Dr. Stone’s untimely demise and limited resources slowed down what could have been a smooth start. However, Dr. Nonato was unhindered by her predicaments and continued her work.

Her research led to the discovery of new secondary metabolites with new biological activities, which is the basis for its medicinal attributes. With her breakthrough discovery, our neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand undertook similar research on their respective Pandanus species.

Moreover, biological studies on pandan have found it as potential source of anti-microbials, anti-viral, diuretics, anti-tuberculars, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory agents.

Consequently, Dr. Nonato’s research on the new alkaloids earned her the 2006 National Research Council of the Philippines Achievement Award in Chemical Sciences. And for her students, her various works on pandan has earned her the monicker “Pandan Queen” as most research literature is attributed to Dr. Nonato’s works. “You just have to work diligently and be the expert in that field,” Dr. Nonato closes.

Finding alternative fuels

Deviating from the usual bioethanol feedstock using corn and other similar food-base materials, Dr. De Leon focused on local fungal species that can degrade complex polymers called lignin to produce ethanol as fuel additives.

According to her, corn and other food-base raw materials should not be used in the production of alternative fuel as this threatens food security in the country.

Her team identified Fusarium moniliforme, one of the most prevalent fungi, as a promising source of ethanol through a consolidated bioprocessing approach that extracts the ethanol from its solid form.

The bioprocess provides the fermentation resulting in the production of a substance with higher ethanol concentration at a shorter processing time.

Other notable scientists conferred were Dr. Enrico C. Paringit, recipient of the David M. Consunji Award for Engineering; Dr. Antonio Dans, for Dr. Paulo C. Campos Award for Health Research; and Dr. Antonio Laureana as this year’s Leads Agri awardee.

In his closing remarks, Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña encouraged DOST to give more recognition to local scientists and researchers as this provides a channel for local talents to be recognized.

“I hope we could give more awards to our local scientists to inspire them and give credit and prominence to their works and contributions to science and the society.”

PhilAAST confers the awards annually to men and women of science who have contributed new knowledge for the advancement of science and technology in the country. Awardees receives P50,000 cash and plaque of recognition.

Pandan chicken: A dish that leaves you wanting more!

By Elaine Ho

KUALA LUMPUR — Any doubts that this dish originates from Asia will be wiped away once you notice the main ingredient here, besides the chicken of course, is screwpine or pandan leaves!

These leaves are quite commonly used in South-east Asian dishes, from meat to fish and even desserts!

Their presence in any dish they are added to is in no way subtle. Pandan lends a distinct, floral-like fragrance to the dish and their sweet, almost rose-like flavour mingles with the natural flavours of the other ingredients.

While they are available in abundance in South-east Asia, looking for them in other countries may be a little difficult.

They are usually sold either dried or frozen in Asian stores, though they may even be available in paste form in some other places. The fresh leaves are much more effective at providing flavour and a stronger aroma compared to the dried ones, making them the first choice in most dishes.

For this dish, the gentle flavour of the pandan leaves softens the strong taste of the chicken, resulting in appetising bites of chicken meat. Wrapping the chicken pieces with pandan leaves also allows the meat to be tender and flavourful when they are fried, encased in the protective embrace of the strips of these aromatic leaves.

This makes them excellent appetisers, as they succeed in only teasing your tastebuds. Or you could also serve them as delicious snacks, though you might have to make large quantities...once you try them, it’s really going to be quite difficult to remember that they are just snacks.

A tech prop for tradition, screw pine industry gets a lifeline

By T. Nandakumar

The ailing screw pine industry in Kerala is set to stage a comeback, thanks to a government-sponsored project to equip the traditional sector with technological support to tap the booming global market for eco-friendly products.

The Jawharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI) has tied up with the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) to set up an integrated research and development centre for the development of the green industry in Kerala.

Rs.18.95-crore project

Located at Kodungalloor, the Rs.18.95-crore project is an extension of a scheme initiated in 2010 for large-scale multiplication of screw pine (Pandanus).

A study conducted by the KSIDC had revealed that the once-thriving cottage industry was driven to the verge of ruin by the shortage of screw pine leaves, the raw material for the production of a range of products such as mats, baskets, and bags.

In many parts of the State, the spiked leaves were also widely used for fencing and thatching.

The first phase of the project seeks to establish a plant tissue culture laboratory for large-scale multiplication of screw pine. A

ccording to K. Satheeshkumar, scientist in charge of the project, Kodungalloor, was traditionally the hub of screw pine cultivation and industry in Kerala. “Thousands of people were employed in the sector,” he said.

But with the decline in cultivation of the palm, the industry suffered a setback and is now left with only a handful of workers.

The second phase of the project involves scientific validation of the quality and durability of screw pine fibre, development of a range of products, and subsequent technology transfer.

Manual processing and extraction of fibre from the spiked leaves is a laborious and costly affair.

“A revival of the screw pine industry will depend on replacing the traditional methods with technology- assisted processes,” says Dr. Satheeshkumar.

Global market

Director of JNTBGRI P.G. Latha said the project was designed to help Kerala claim a share of the huge global market for natural fibre products and generate employment for tens of thousands of women.

The R&D centre will focus on the development of technology to convert the fibres into value-added products such as bags, hats, floor coverings, and handicrafts.

It will also seek to develop natural dyes for the products. Scientists at JNTBGRI are reportedly close to developing a natural dye from mushroom.

The integrated centre also seeks to establish a conservatory of available species and varieties of screw pine. The JNTBGRI has acquired a taller variety of the species from the Andamans which yields larger leaves.

“We are trying to propagate the variety here,” Dr. Latha said. The institute is also supplying saplings of screw pine to be used as soil binders for the protection of riverbanks and slopes prone to erosion.

New therapeutic garden opens in HortPark

By Nadia Jansen Hassan (CNA/av)

Located at Hyderabad Road, this is the first time a therapeutic garden has been developed in a public park in Singapore.

SINGAPORE: In a bid to improve the well-being of residents and to help seniors age gracefully, the National Parks Board (NParks) launched a new therapeutic garden at HortPark on Saturday (May 14).

Located at Hyderabad Road, this is the first time a therapeutic garden has been developed in a public park in Singapore. It features elements of horticultural therapy, which is the use of plants and nature to benefit and stimulate the human mind.

Every detail in the garden is said to be strategic. Vibrant-coloured flowers were chosen as an uplifting visual stimulant, while there are also pastel-coloured flowers on display to give a calming effect. Pandan leaves were also planted to activate the sense of smell.

"We have even chosen plantings such that they attract butterflies and birds, so that when people come in here, they can basically uplift their mental well-being through looking at all these things," said Mr Lim Liang Jim, group director of the Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology at NParks.

The National University Health System had also given input into the design, based on a study it had conducted with NParks on how the elderly benefit from horticultural therapy.

"The rate of depression drops," said Professor Kua Ee Heok, a senior consultant at the Department of Psychological Medicine at the National University Health System. "We did a blood test assessment, a kind of blood chemical we call cytokines; they are the ones that influence our immune system. We found that the cytokine levels also fall, which means that it builds up the immune resistance of old people. This is important, it prevents them from having a lot of illnesses, depression, even cancer."

The garden is also wheelchair friendly with plenty of shade for visitors, and NParks will also work with homes and senior activity centres to provide gardening programmes for the elderly.

The statutory board is hoping to develop more therapeutic gardens to benefit the public. Ten more are expected to be implemented in more public parks.

Senior Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee, who was at the opening, said the garden will "serve as a prototype" for the rest of the upcoming network.

"NParks will start with two upcoming therapeutic gardens in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and Tiong Bahru Park," he said. "NParks will also partner with Ministry of Health and explore partnerships with other agencies to develop therapeutic gardens in their premises. NParks will support these efforts by developing a set of guidelines and design principles for therapeutic gardens."

A project which will improve the quality of Albay’s pandan products has been pursued by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture Aquatic Resources Research and Development.

This is the Integrated Research and Development Project for Karagomoi to Create Agri-industrial Business Opportunities in Albay.

“In a calamity-prone area like the Bicol region, pandan is a source of hope and a symbol of resilience for many. Making handicrafts provides livelihood and enhances people’s creativity in developing novel products,” reported Meryll Kyla Irader in Farmnews.

Farmers need to be trained on plantation development for pandan in order to achieve economies of scale in handicraft production.

Pandan is usually harvested three years upon plantation development.

Aside from backyard farming, the lowly pandan can now be planted in marshlands, shaded areas under forest trees and as intercrop with coconut and anahaw. It may also be planted along creeks and river banks.

Farmers are discouraged from planting pandan together with commonly growing trees like Ipil Ipil and Isis as this causes prevalence in diseases in pandan such as leaf spot and scars. Farmers are encouraged to clean the farms especially in intercropping sites.

Planting materials that are clean or disease-free are being reproduced. Suckers are obtained only from healthy mother plants.

A drying system may also need to be developed since drying pandan takes around two days. On sunny days, pandan leaves are easier to dry by exposing them to the sun the whole day.

Good times ahead for screw pine mats

By Ignatius Pereira

The dying craft of screw pine leaf mat making is hopefully looking forward to better days with these mats getting international attention.

A team of students from the Copenhagen School of Design and Technology, Denmark, showed keen interest in the product and the craftsmanship behind it.

Exchange programme

The students, 21 of them, who are here as part of an exchange programme organised by the Kerala State Institute of Design (KSID), interacted on Tuesday with Sumangala, a woman at Thazhava near Karunagapally. She is a veteran in the art.

As part of the programme, the students were initially introduced to the screw pine plant by KSID administrative officer T. Radhakrishnan. It has sword-like leaves of the plant that is used to make mats. On Wednesday, the KSID organised workshop led by Ms. Sumangala where the Denmark students had hands-on experience in the art and some of them did succeed. During the workshop, the students were asked to provide ideas on making use of the art to create products for contemporary global markets.

Screw pine mat weaving used to be one of the oldest crafts practised by the women in Kerala.

The art is time-consuming, as it involves a lot of patience.

Process

The process begins with harvesting the leaves of the screw pine, which not so long ago were seen aplenty all over Kerala. The leaves have sharp thorns running along both edges, and the art begins with removing these thorns by stripping them off with a knife.

After drying the leaves, the weaving is done in a crisscross manner, similar to thatching of coconut palm fronds.

The mats have a reputation of being ideal for both warm and cold climates.

In the olden days, these mats provided ideal base for beds prepared for infants.
