Educational Note: Only 17 of the 18 administrative regions of the Philippines are under the jurisdiction and general supervision of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is the sole exception — it operates under its own organic law and answers directly to the President of the Philippines.. (This distinction is often misunderstood, as many Filipinos assume BARMM is under the DILG — it is not.)

Region 7 – Central Visayas
Overview
Region 7, also known as Central Visayas, is an administrative region in the Philippines located in the heart of the Visayas island group. As of 2020, it has a population of over 8 million people. Central Visayas is composed of four provinces: Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. Cebu City is the regional center and also a major economic hub of the south.
Geography
Central Visayas is primarily coastal and includes the islands of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. The region is bounded by the Visayan Sea to the north, the Camotes Sea and Leyte to the east, the Bohol Sea to the south, and Negros Island to the west. The area is a mix of fertile plains, rolling hills, and rugged mountains, with many famous beaches, rivers, and coral reefs. Its total land area is about 15,875 square kilometers.
People and Culture
Central Visayas is home to Cebuano-speaking people, along with Boholanos and other Visayan groups. The region is predominantly Roman Catholic, and religious traditions shape much of its social life. People celebrate numerous fiestas and religious events, and traditional dances, music, and crafts are vibrant. Local cuisine centers on rice, fish, and tropical fruits.
Economy
The economy of Central Visayas is based on trade, tourism, and agriculture. Cebu City and its neighboring cities are critical centers for commerce, IT and business processing, shipping, and manufacturing. Agriculture remains important in Bohol, Siquijor, and rural areas of Negros Oriental, with sugarcane, coconut, rice, and corn as primary crops. Tourism is booming, thanks to attractions like Bohol’s Chocolate Hills and Siquijor’s beach resorts.
Festivals
Sinulog Festival (Cebu): One of the country’s most spectacular, celebrating the Santo Niño in January.
Sandugo Festival (Bohol): Reenacts a blood compact and highlights unity.
Buglasan Festival (Negros Oriental): Known as the “Festival of Festivals.”
Siquijor’s Healing Festival: Celebrates local folk healing traditions and mysticism.
Government
Region 7 is overseen by a regional office with Cebu City as its administrative center. Each province has its own local government led by a governor. There are 16 cities (including Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu as highly urbanized) and 116 municipalities in the region, divided into more than 3,000 barangays.
