La Union Gears Up to Host Second Consecutive World Surf League Event

The province of La Union is set to once again host the prestigious World Surf League (WSL) International Pro at Urbiztondo Beach, attracting approximately 250 professional surfers from the Philippines and around the world. Scheduled to take place from January 22 to 28, the event promises to have a positive impact on the province’s tourism and economy.

Rowan Joshue Dimaculangan, Provincial Information Officer, revealed that this marks the second consecutive year that La Union has been chosen to host the WSL. The 2023 event is specifically designated for the International Pro Qualifying Series and Long Board Tour.

In collaboration with the United Philippines Surfing Association, the municipality of San Juan, the Department of Tourism, and other key stakeholders, the provincial government has worked diligently to make this sporting spectacle a reality.

The competition will bring together Filipino surfers to face off against representatives from France, Indonesia, Japan, Sweden, Taiwan, and Thailand.

The grand opening ceremony on January 22 will take place at the picturesque Flotsam and Jetsam Artist Beach Hostel.

Dimaculangan expressed his pride in La Union’s role as the host, highlighting the province’s growing reputation as a thriving destination for such events, contributing significantly to economic growth and attracting international tourists.

During last year’s WSL event held from January 20 to 26, 2023, the Provincial Tourism Office recorded an impressive 17,976 tourists. San Juan town’s more than 200 accommodation establishments were fully booked, with some visitors spilling over into nearby Bacnotan and San Fernando City. Restaurants also enjoyed high occupancy rates.

The provincial government is committed to ensuring peace and order during the international competition, with the active involvement of the Philippine National Police, other law enforcement agencies, and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Dimaculangan expressed the hope that this competition would solidify La Union’s position as a preferred partner and destination for international tournaments. He also emphasized the diverse attractions La Union has to offer, such as Tangadan Falls, grape-picking experiences, and historical architectural sites, making it a well-rounded tourist destination.
