About Daguioman, Abra
Location and Access
Daguioman is a small, landlocked upland municipality in eastern Abra, within the Cordillera Administrative Region of northern Luzon. It lies in a mountainous valley about 65.81 kilometers by road from the provincial capital Bangued and is reached via interior roads that pass through other Abra municipalities such as Sallapadan and Bucloc.
Access to Daguioman is primarily by land. From Bangued, public utility jeepneys and other vehicles follow the Bangued–Sallapadan–Bucloc–Daguioman route, with trips ending near the municipal center in the highlands of Daguioman. Road conditions and travel time are affected by weather and the rugged terrain, so schedules are more limited compared to lowland towns.
Daguioman has no airport or seaport of its own. For air travel, residents and visitors normally use airports in nearby provinces and then travel by bus or van to Bangued before transferring to jeepneys bound for Daguioman. For sea travel, ports along the western coast of Northern Luzon serve as gateways, followed by overland travel toward Abra and onward to the municipality.
Municipal Hall Location
The Daguioman Municipal Hall is located in the poblacion area, within Barangay Tui (Pob.), Daguioman, Abra. This barangay serves as the civic and administrative center of the municipality, hosting the municipal hall, central elementary school, rural health unit, and other public facilities.
Economy
Daguioman’s economy is predominantly rural and agriculture-based. Farmers cultivate rice (including irrigated rice terraces), corn, root crops, vegetables, and fruit trees on valley bottoms and terraced hillsides. Backyard livestock raising—such as poultry, pigs, and cattle—supplements household income.
Support programs have introduced high-value crops and small agro-processing ventures in barangays like Pikek, Daguioman, Abra, where vegetables and processed food products are produced for local consumption and sale outside the municipality. Community-based organizations, including cooperatives operating in Pikek, help farmers and small entrepreneurs access assistance, markets, and small loans.
Tourism is emerging as a complementary activity. The municipality promotes its scenic rice terraces, rivers, and waterfalls—particularly areas reached from barangays such as Ableg, Daguioman, Abra—as eco-tourism and trekking destinations, alongside community-based cultural experiences with the local Itneg (Banao) population.
Natural Resources and Rivers
Daguioman is endowed with steep mountains, forested slopes, and fertile valleys. Forest areas provide timber, fuelwood, bamboo, and a variety of wild plants used for food, crafts, and traditional herbal medicine, especially around barangays like Tui (Pob.) and Cabaruyan, Daguioman, Abra.
The municipality is drained by clear mountain rivers and streams that feed into the Abra River system. These waterways supply irrigation for rice fields and vegetable gardens, as well as water for domestic use and livestock. Small irrigation projects and communal canals, such as those serving farmlands in Tui and Ableg, help sustain agricultural production. Natural attractions like Basakal Falls, accessed from Ableg, and riverside areas such as Lumangat Riverview in Tui, also draw visitors and serve as recreational sites for locals.
Power, Water, and Utilities
Electric power in Daguioman is distributed by the Abra Electric Cooperative (ABRECO), which connects the municipality to the Luzon power grid. Electricity reaches the main barangays and public facilities, although supply reliability can be affected by weather events, landslides, and the difficulty of maintaining lines in mountainous terrain.
Water supply systems are largely community-managed. Households rely on spring developments, gravity-fed pipelines, and communal tap stands, with various projects implemented to improve potable water access in barangays such as Ableg and Tui (Pob.). Many residents still depend on shared standpipes, local water associations, and individual storage containers, rather than a formal water district.
Telecommunications and mobile phone services are present but variable. Signal strength is usually better near the poblacion and along main roads, and weaker in remote sitios and higher mountain slopes.
Banking, Commerce, and Health Services
Daguioman has no full-service commercial bank branches or automated teller machines. Residents typically travel to larger towns—especially Bangued, Abra—to access banking, ATM services, and more complex financial transactions. Within the municipality, cooperatives and community organizations based in barangays like Pikek provide basic savings and credit services for farmers, entrepreneurs, and households.
Local commerce is modest and centered in the poblacion at Tui (Pob.), where small stores, eateries, and market stalls trade rice, vegetables, livestock, and everyday household items. In the other barangays—Ableg, Cabaruyan, and Pikek—sari-sari stores and itinerant vendors supply basic goods, while residents go to Bangued or other towns for larger purchases and specialized services.
Health services are anchored by the Daguioman Rural Health Unit located in the poblacion area, which provides primary care, maternal and child health services, and public health programs. Barangay health stations and health workers support immunization, basic treatment, and health education in the outlying barangays. For hospital care, emergency services, and specialist treatment, patients are usually referred to hospitals in Bangued and other urban centers outside the municipality.
Education
Public basic education in Daguioman is managed by the Daguioman Schools District under the Schools Division Office of Abra. The municipality is served by a small network of elementary and primary schools that give children access to basic education close to home. These include:
- Cabaruyan Elementary School in Barangay Cabaruyan
- Daguioman Central School in Barangay Tui (Pob.)
- Pikek Primary School in Barangay Pikek
With these schools distributed among its four barangays, most children in Daguioman can attend elementary or primary school within their own barangay or in the nearby poblacion.
Secondary education is provided by Capitan National High School, located in or near Barangay Tui (Pob.). This public high school offers junior and senior high school programs and serves students from all barangays of Daguioman. For tertiary education, most students enroll in colleges and universities in Bangued and in other cities of the Cordillera and neighboring regions, often staying in boarding houses or with relatives while studying.
Local Transportation
Local transportation in Daguioman reflects its remote, mountainous character. Public utility jeepneys and vans provide the main link between Daguioman and Bangued, using the interior road network that passes through other municipalities. These vehicles carry both passengers and goods, including farm produce and supplies.
Within and between barangays, residents commonly walk along footpaths and farm trails or ride motorcycles and habal-habal units, especially where roads are narrow, steep, or unpaved. Around the poblacion in Tui, motorcycles and a small number of tricycles are used for short trips, bringing people to schools, the municipal hall, the health unit, and the market area.
There are no regular taxicab services operating in Daguioman, and app-based ride-hailing services are not in use. For longer journeys—such as travel to the provincial capital, coastal cities, or regional centers—residents typically combine jeepney or van rides from Daguioman with bus or van services that depart from Bangued and other junction towns.
