Zamboanga City is made up of 98 barangays, which are divided into two congressional districts.
District I primarily represents the western portion of the city, including central urban barangays and nearby coastal areas.
District II covers the eastern side, extending into rural areas and including all of the city’s island barangays.
Zamboanga is a non-sectarian city with a long history of cultural diversity. Out of its 98 barangays:
22 are predominantly Islamic barangays.
Importantly, all of the city’s island barangays fall under this category, meaning the island-based communities are entirely Muslim in character.

Island barangays – All religiously Islamic, they are fishing-based communities situated in the waters off Zamboanga. Their populations maintain deep cultural and historical ties to Islam.
