    History of Badiangan, Iloilo, Philippines

The Municipality of Badiangan is divided into 31 barangays including the Poblacion. It contains an area of 7,750 hectares. Brgy. Botong is the largest barangay with an area of 481.12 hectares while Brgy. Indorohan is the smallest with 51.27 hectares. Poblacion covers an area of only 286.38 hectares. Badiangan belongs to the 3rd Congressional District.

Badiangan was a barrio in the Municipality of Janiuay, Province of Iloilo. Badiangan was created under Republic Act 5006 of the 6th Congress of the Philippines on June 17, 1967.

The name “Badiangan” was derived from the word “Kabadiangan” which means a place where “badiang” plants grew abundantly. “Badiang” are large leaf fronds resembling giant water lilies that thrive in swampy areas and/or moist grounds.

Badiangan was created through the initiative of then Congresswoman Gloria Montinola-Tabiana, first female lawmaker in Iloilo. She succeeded her husband, Ramon C. Tabiana, a second termer who died suddenly. Congressman Montinola was the daughter of Senator Ruperto Montinola.

The Act separated 31 barrios of Janiuay under the new Municipality of Badiangan – Badiangan, Agusipan, Astorga, Bingauan, Bitaoyan, Botong, Budiawe, Cabanga-an, Cabayogan, Calanzanan, Catubig, Guinauahan, Ilongbukid, Indorohan, Iniligan, Latawan, Linayuan, Mainguit, Malublub, Manaolan, Mapili Grande, Mapili Sangjo, Odiongan, San Julian, Sariri, Sianon, Sinwagan, Talaba, Tamocol, Teneclan, and Tina.

The seat of government was established in Badiangan. Elected Mayor Acanto of Janiuay continued to serve until the election of Petre Nobleza as the First Mayor of Badiangan.

The term “barrios” representing local divisions of areas was renamed in the 1970s “barangay” which is the local government administrative unit (LGU) with its own governance structure of elected officials, authorized personnel and community workers. The barangay elections coincide with national elections, except, upon legal postponement. (Edited by Elsa Armada Abordo Bayani)
