A Near-Milestone Worth Celebrating for the Philippine Economy

The Philippines has come within a hair’s breadth of crossing into upper middle income status, missing the World Bank’s threshold by just $26 per capita. While some may see this as a near miss, it is, in truth, a powerful testament to the country’s remarkable economic resilience and momentum.

With a gross national income (GNI) per capita of $4,470 in 2024—just shy of the $4,496 benchmark—the nation stands on the cusp of a new era. This achievement is not a fluke. It reflects years of robust growth, rising wages, falling unemployment, and a burgeoning middle class. Major infrastructure projects, a revitalized tourism sector, and strong policy reforms have all contributed to this progress12.

Rather than focusing on the narrow gap, we should celebrate how far the Philippines has come. The government remains optimistic, and with global economic headwinds expected to ease, the upgrade is within reach. For a country that struggled for decades, this near-milestone is a clear sign: the future is bright, and the Philippines is firmly on the path to greater prosperity.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod is composed of the City (Municipality) Vice-Mayor as Presiding Officer, regular Sanggunian members (Councilors), the President of the Association of Barangay Captains and the President of the Sangguniang Kabataan.

They shall exercise and perform the legislative powers and duties as provided for under Republic Act No. 7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991. Budget of Municipalities and Cities: The Philippine budget formulation system is not centralizedIt has been decentralized since 1991. It is the responsibility of each LGU to submit their budgetary needs for review. Failure to submit is the problem. “IMPERIAL MANILA IS A MYTH!”.
