DICT Reports 78% of Public Schools Now Online

During a recent address to the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Makati City, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda announced that approximately 78% of public schools across the Philippines now have internet access.

This marks a significant step toward fulfilling President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s pledge to connect all public schools to the internet by the end of 2025. Earlier this year, only about 60% of schools were online, leaving roughly 12,000 institutions—many located in remote and underserved regions—without connectivity.

Aguda credited the progress to close collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd), emphasizing that transparency and public accountability have played a vital role. “When citizens can see where their taxes are going—when infrastructure is visible and verifiable—it encourages collective participation,” he said.

The expansion of the National Fiber Backbone (NFB) project is central to the government’s strategy. Phase 1 of the initiative, which spans over 1,200 kilometers from Laoag in Ilocos Norte to Quezon City, has already been completed. Phases 2 and 3 are now underway, aiming to extend fiber optic coverage by an additional 1,800 kilometers—from Cagayan Valley down to Mindanao. These efforts are expected to benefit around 17 million Filipinos.

Aguda also noted that the DICT is working closely with telecommunications providers to accelerate implementation and ensure reliable service delivery.
