CABARROGUIS, Quirino, Jan.11 (PIA) -- The provincial board here has approved an ordinance condoning the interests and penalties on overdue real property tax payable to the provincial and municipal governments in 2011 and prior years on account of the calamities that visited the province.
Citing Section 276 of Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991 which states that in case of a general failure of crops or substantial decrease in the price of agricultural or agri-based products, or calamity in any province, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan on recommendation of the local disaster council passed Ordinance No. 4 aimed at condoning or reducing the taxes and interests in all the municipalities of the province.
The provincial board said that the move is a form of relief assistance to real property owners who have failed to pay real property taxes in 2011 and prior years.
It can be recalled that last year, typhoons Juaning, Pedring and Quiel adversely affected plantations of palay, corn, vegetables, bananas and orchards as well as destroying thousands of houses and various government infrastructures.
The period of payment of the basic real property taxes including the corresponding special education fund is from January 1, 2012 until June 30, 2012 only. Taxpayers can pay in staggered basis. (TCB/PIA 2)
