LUCENA CITY, Quezon- The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA)-Quezon is now accepting nominations for outstanding agricultural achievers for the ‘Gawad Saka 2012” which is open to all farmers and fisherfolks in the province.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) under the Kapit Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) program, will fund 82 community projects to address the needs of various poor communities in Quezon Province.

Provincial agriculturist Roberto Gajo said the contest aims to search for outstanding farmers/fisherfolks who were successful in their chosen field, to encourage and share their expertise with others to promote innovative technologies for duplication by others.
With a total cost of P99.2 million, the projects will be implemented using the community driven development (CDD) approach of the KALAHI-CIDSS in the 11 program covered municipalities in the provinces.

Gajo also encouraged all municipalities to participate and send entries for all the categories in the competition. The search has three levels: provincial, regional and national level. Winners in the provincial level will vie for the regional level and the winners in the regional level will automatically compete in the national level.
The municipalities are Macalelon, Catanauan and Perez, which covers the 2010 KALAHI-CIDSS areas, and Buenavista, Burdeos, Dolores, Jomalig, Panukulan, Pantnanungan, San Francisco, and San Narciso which previously implemented the three cycles KALAHI-CIDSS and started implementation of the program in 2011 under the Makamasang Tugon Modality.

‘Gawad Saka’ is a yearly undertaking of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in cooperation with other government institutions, non-government offices and the private sector. Started in 1970, the project aims to give due recognition and pay tribute to dedicated individuals and institutions whose exemplary accomplishments in their respective fields of endeavor and contribution in the country’s agricultural development are deemed worthy of emulation. It is a tribute to farmers, fisherfolks, and institutions in recognition of their agricultural contributions towards a modernized and equitable agriculture.
Among the community projects to be implemented in the areas are farm-to-market roads (FMR), water system, electrification, health centers, day care centers, school buildings, bridges, and line canals.

The provincial government of Quezon headed by Gov. David Suarez through the provincial agriculture office has been an active partner of the DA in this endeavor. The OPA recognizes hardworking farmers who excel in their chosen agricultural activity, giving inspiration to others to follow their farming practices, thus the annual search for outstanding agricultural achievers.
Under the KALAHI–CIDSS program, community residents are given bigger stakes or involvement in the identification, planning, implementation and monitoring of the community development projects which are in response to their respective identified priority needs.

The 82 community projects are expected to be completed within the first semester of 2012.

Overall, KALAHI-CIDSS program had funded a total of 232 community projects worth P338,156,981.20 in the said areas since 2003.
