MADDELA, Quirino, October 26 (PIA) -- The National Agribusiness Corporation (NABCOR), a government owned and controlled corporation operating in this town, has suffered from a very low collection from the farmers who loaned certified corn seeds, fertilizers and other farm inputs.
Sylvia Consolacion, cashier, said the NABCOR facilitated the release of interest-free loans for farmers in the form of farm inputs such as certified corn seeds and fertilizers. This was done through the Quirino Livelihood for Everyone, the livelihood component of province’s ‘I Love Quirino’ project.
Consolacion said they were able to release P8 million worth of farm inputs but to this date, their collection is still at P2 million.
“Most of the farmers who availed loans were adversely affected by typhoons Mina, Pedring and Quiel so we are accepting partial payments,” she said.
The NABCOR is buying the farmers’ corn-in-cob at P5.70 per kg and their loans are supposed to be deducted from their sales. However, due to the typhoons which destroyed the corn crops, only farmers who harvested early were able to sell corn-in-cobs to the NABCOR.
Consolacion said as of October 13, the NABCOR has only procured an estimated P1.5 million worth of corn-in-cobs.
The NABCOR is a government-owned and controlled corporation attached to the Department of Agriculture (DA) which buys and processes corn-on-cobs straight from the farm. This tremendously helps farmers decrease their post-harvest losses and increase their income. (TCB/PIA 2)
