ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) - Local government units, government offices and some of the academe in the Zamboanga Peninsula region have undergone orientation on the compliance of Republic Act 10173 or Data Privacy Act of 2012 initiated by the National Privacy Commission (NPC), together with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-9 in Zamboanga City.
The activity, which is the third leg of several roadshows scheduled all over the country, seeks to provide a venue where LGUs can familiarize themselves with the fundamental data privacy principles, data privacy law and its implementing rules, as well as with the administrative policies issued by NPC.
Deputy Privacy Commissioner Dondi Mapa said, “the initiative will facilitate better delivery of government services to the public.”
Moreover, he said this will establish a network of cooperation among all local government units that will pledge loyalty to the highest standards of data privacy, which is in line with the trust ascribed by the Filipino people.
He also urged the attendees from the various sectors of the government to designate one or more data privacy officer, who will be responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations for protection of data privacy and security.
“Data is very important. If we do not protect that data, someone else may use it for illegal purposes such as opening a credit card, take bank loans, and even use PhilHealth benefits,” he said.
