ANGELES CITY - Some 17 Angeleño, who bagged medals during the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur last August, received recognition and awards from city officials led by Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan on Monday at the City Hall.
The awardees include athletes who competed from three sports events on lawn bowls and karatedo.
The Philippine Lawn Bowls Team, whose members hail from Angeles City, garnered a total of 4 gold medals for the Men Fours category, 9 silver medals Ladies Fours and Triples, and Men Pairs category, and 3 bronze medals for the Ladies Pairs category.
SEA Games medalist Ainie Knight, who has been playing Lawn Bowls for 10 years, said their recent achievement was born out of the team’s perseverance to attain the country’s global stature in the said field of sports.
“It has been our pride to carry the name of our country, especially our city, whenever we compete in different athletic events. Despite scarcity in facilities, we are proud that we were able to maintain the stature of the Philippines in the international sports arena,” said Knight.
“We are in awe of the importance and recognition that the city has been bestowing to us, especially by Mayor Pamintuan. We guarantee to bring home more medals for the glory of the city in the next competitions that we will be joining in,” Knight added.
Kimverly Madrona of Team Kumite, who won a bronze medal for Karate Do, and Triathlon Coach Melvin Fausto were also given recognition during the Monday flag raising rites.
“The success of our people is the success of the city. Our athletes reflect on how resilient and triumphant the Angeleños are despite hindrances and constraints,” said Pamintuan.
“The city is truly proud to have promising sportspersons and that we vow supporting them through our sports development division,” the mayor added.
With a total of 121 total medals, the Philippines ranked sixth among 11 competing countries based on the final medal tally.
The Angeleño SEA Games team received a certificate of recognition and cash incentives from the city government.
The team expressed eagerness to bring more medals for the country, which is reportedly hosting the 2019 SEA Games.
