BASCO, Batanes- The municipal government of Basco highlighted the opening program of the Kulay festival last April 16 by awarding the most outstanding barangay, two outstanding Ivasay and one Basco love ko promoter. | |||
The most outstanding barangay is Kayhuvukan, which was evaluated monthly by a team from September 2011 to April 2012. The assessment was based on the upkeep of peace and order, sanitation, functionality/implementation of program and projects, and vision and innovations. | |||
Two outstanding Ivasay (local term for a “native of Basco) were recognized: Valeriano Lizardo, for being a model artisan, who preserved the skills and culture of the original, indigenous tataya-making, and Severino Villarta, for his noteworthy contribution in the preservation of organic vegetable production, a constant supplier of vegetables year-round even on off seasons. | |||
Villarta is a bearer of the provincial motto: “Go back to farming for livelihood and survival, the organic way.” | |||
The third awardee is a community service recipient of "Basco love ko," Ramona EA. Castillejos, a retired supervisor in Science at the Department of Education. | |||
Since her retirement, Castillejos intensified her efforts and time to play shepherd to the flock of Basco senior citizens which enhanced the healthy lifestyle of the elderly and she is also assisting the senior citizens to promote the elderly rights and welfare. | |||
The outstanding barangay awardee received a plaque of recognition and P4,000 cash while three others were each given a plaque. | |||
