KORONADAL CITY, Nov 6 (PIA) -- The provincial government of South Cotabato is specifically targeting 1,416 "poorest of the poor" households in its program to address severe malnutrition. | |||
Provincial Nutrition officer Ma. Anna Uy told members of the press that these families were identified based on the number of preschool children found severely underweight in a survey conducted at the beginning of the school year. | |||
"Once a child is severely underweight, most likely the entire family is experiencing malnutrition," Uy said. | |||
Considering that these families "need immediate intervention," Gov. Arthur Y. Pingoy Jr. immediately directed Uy and her team to determine the specific locations of these families and prepare a supplemental feeding program for them. | |||
Unlike the other nutrition programs of the provincial LGU, such as the Kapitbisig Para sa Kabataan project, which is supported by non government and civic organizations, the supplemental feeding program for the poorest of the poor is solely funded by the local government. | |||
Uy said the provincial government has allocated approximately P4 million for this project. | |||
She added they have already prepared the food packages and will be distributed anytime now. | |||
Each food pack contains rice, mongo, iodized salt, and high-calcium whole milk. | |||
The contents are enough to supply a third of each household's weekly nutritional requirement, she explained. | |||
"Each pack also contains iron supplementation for mothers and multi-vitamins for the children," she added. | |||
To assure sustainability of this supplementation program, mothers of these households will be educated in nutrition through the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon under the Infant Youth Child Feeding (IYCF) program, which is also being intensified by the provincial government. (PIA 12) | |||
