The UPS Foundation awarded a grant totaling more than P1.8 million (US$43,892) to the Philippine Red Cross Rizal Chapter – Parañaque City Branch – in support of its Red Cross 143 Training Project.
The Paranaque City government recognized yesterday an 11- year-old girl for act of courage for rescuing another child when a light cargo plane crashed last December 10 along Lower Taiwan, Dona Soledad Extension, Bgy. Don Bosco, Paranaque City.

The Red Cross 143 Training Project aims to promote disaster preparedness and management training, mobilizing and empowering teams of volunteers in the 16 barangays (districts/villages) in Parañaque City, which is largely made up of residential areas. In this project, response teams are provided with a kit that contains materials essential to disaster response. A total of 2,000 volunteers are expected to complete the training program by May 2012.
Mayor Florencio Bernabe said Rodelyn Molina suffered multiple third degree burns in her body for plucking another girl from a blaze that ensued after a plane crash. The fire killed 13 persons, injured 15 and damaged one public elementary school. Some 30 houses were also razed by the blaze sending more than 40 families homeless.

“One of the core values of UPS is ensuring safety,” notes Tim Gohoc, managing director of UPS Philippines. “Safety is not just limited within the confines of our company’s premises, but we also try and help ensure the safety of the communities where we operate. UPS and the Philippine Red Cross are partners in service, sharing a common goal of ensuring a sustainable future for our communities.
“Rodelyn’s act is a shining example of uncommon courage and fierce determination to save others even If she comes to harm’s way. We commend her for this selfless act and urge our citizens to develop this quality and come to the aid of fellow citizens in times of great need as in disasters like this one,” said Bernabe.

UPS and the Philippine Red Cross Rizal Chapter – Parañaque City Branch have a sustaining partnership. Previously, The UPS Foundation awarded a US$ 50,000 grant to the Philippine Red Cross in 2009, as part of relief efforts for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. More recently, UPS Philippines employees have helped build shelter for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy, helping rebuild their lives two years after the tragedy.
The Parañaque City Government paid Molina’s P1.4 hospital bill which the PCSO later reimbursed. Molina was received a P50,000 cash toke from city government.
