KORONADAL CITY, Nov. 10 (PIA) -- Members of the Regional Development Council, region XII participated in a planning-workshop for the preparation of the Regional Strategic Action Plan of the National Greening Program of President Benigno S. Aquino,III towards a clean and healthy environment. | |||
Under the National Greening program as provided by Executive Order 26, 1.5 billion trees covering about 1.5 million hectares public domain shall be planted for a period of six (6) years from 2011 to 2016. | |||
Rolando Doria, economic development committee chairman and private sector representative, economic sector, RDC XII underscored the importance of the galvanized efforts of all sectors in the greening program as a policy of the State to pursue sustainable development for poverty reduction, food security, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation and adaptation. | |||
"We will complement present initiatives of both government and non-government organizations to boost the greening program in region XII not only as a matter of contingency in view of the prevailing environmental degradation but likewise for the protection and conservation of what is left of our natural resources for the future generation," Doria said. | |||
NEDA XII assistant regional director Phlorita Ridao said to contribute to the vision of attaining green and healthy environment, the region shall improve its ecological integrity by rehabilitating, conserving and protecting its ecosystems and enforcing compliance to environmental laws. | |||
Ridao further said that reforestation efforts of denuded upland and wetland areas have to be accelerated. | |||
DENR XII Forest Management Services director Ernesto Lezada disclosed that the region has a total forest cover of 1,981,371 hectares with Cotabato province with the biggest cover of 663,707 hectares followed by Sultan Kudarat, 483,198 hectares. The other areas are South Cotabato, 422, 233 hectares; Sarangani province, 398,079 hectares and Cotabato City, 14,071. | |||
Lezada said a total of 535,312 hectares are potential NGP sites outside forestry tenures. These areas, he added, comprise of other land, natural, grassland - 92,498 hectares; other wooded land, shrubs - 372,413 hectares and other wooded lands - 535,312 hectares. (OTSudaria/PIA 12) | |||
