KORONADAL CITY, Nov 9 (PIA) -- Officials of South Cotabato have recently asked Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala for the inclusion of either Sarangani Province or General Santos City in the Roll on, Roll off (RORO) route. | |||
Provincial Agriculture Officer Reynaldo Legaste said putting up of a RORO terminal in Glan, Sarangani will be an advantage to South Cotabato’s farmers, especially growers of quality vegetables. | |||
Legaste explained that approximately 30 percent of the province’s vegetable production in the province are sold outside of the province through the nearest RORO ports in Davao City or Cagayan de Oro City. | |||
“At times when there is surplus of vegetable in Davao City, our vegetables are rejected,” he said. “The same happens in Cagayan (de Oro).” | |||
Legaste said thousands of farmers in South Cotabato and neighboring areas will benefit if a RORO station is set up in either Glan or Gensan. | |||
“If this is realized we will be able to improve the capacity and provide opportunities for our vegetable growers,” he said. | |||
Growers in the province and neighboring areas will be able to immediately ship their produce at cheaper cost, he added. | |||
Legaste said, vegetable farmers in the province have already been organized, “which means that we already have a formal structure with whom we can talk about creating a production program and link with possible markets.” | |||
South Cotabato is considered as a major producer of high-quality vegetables in southern and central Mindanao. | |||
Major production areas include Tupi municipality, particularly Brgy. Miasong, which has more than 300 hectares devoted to vegetables and the highland barangay of Ned in Lake Sebu town where another 300 hectares are recently being developed. (PIA 12) | |||
