The town's former name of "Sexmoan" was how it was spelled in Spanish by friars with "X" pronounced as "KS" as in mexico attempting to transcribe "Sasmuan", the original and current name. It was derived from the ancient Kapampangan rootwordsasmo, which means to meet, according to a 17th century Kapampangan dictionary.Sasmoan therefore is synonymous with "pitagmuan" or "meeting place of the datus". It was named "Sasmuan" because it is where the Pampangos meet when they were at war with the Chinese in Guagua.

The municipality Sasmuan (Sexmoan) is seated about 12 km south-west of province capital City Of San Fernandoand about 58 km north-west of Philippine main capital Manila.

Sasmuan (Sexmoan) is a 4th class municipality. Regarding urbanization Sasmuan (Sexmoan) is classified as partly urban. Sasmuan (Sexmoan) occupies an area of 91.80 km². By the end of 2007 Sasmuan (Sexmoan) was the home of 26,630 residents. Thus by average 290.09 people are living on one km².

The most populous are Batang 1st,Mabuanbuan, Sabitanan, Batang 2nd, San Antonio, Malusac, San Nicolas 1st, San Pedro, San Nicolas 2nd, Santo Tomas, Santa Lucia (Pob.), Santa Monica.
