MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, May 8 (PIA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Southern Leyte is holding a two-day values orientation to the recipients of the Starter Kit livelihood program for the small economic entrepreneurs in the locality on May 7 and 8.  
MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, May 9 (PIA) -- At least 30 sports delegates from Maasin City was sent off Thursday to participate in the Palarong Pambansa 2012 held at Lingayen, Pangasinan, as part of the Eastern Visayas regional delegation.  


“Before the release of the financial assistance to the 63 informal workers for the second batch of the Starter Kit livelihood program, they all need to undergo a Social Preparation Training and Entrepreneurship Appreciation (SPTEA) course with the employment agency provincial staff,” DOLE Provincial Office senior staff Mario Tictic disclosed.  
“Maasin City in Action” program host Zaldy Olita reported via phone patch this morning from Pangasinan that Maasin City delegates include the athletes, coaches and trainers from different sports such as badminton, swimming, arnis, boxing, softball, among other games that gave Maasin City athletes medals during the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) competition held early this year hosted by Maasin City.  


He also stated the program’s objective of providing a sustainable source of income for the family is to see a fully operational entrepreneurial undertaking that would make a change in the lives of the beneficiaries.  
Olita, Maasin City Sports Council staff, who went with the delegates said that the games begun Sunday, May 6, “but the opening of the competition formally opened Monday, May 7 when President Benigno S. Aquino delivered his address to the athletes, coaches and officials including the game spectators at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center as the main venue of the Palaro, in Lingayen, Pangasinan.  


Tictic said the livelihood assistance will be received by the recipients in form of materials needed for each of the project proposals submitted such as carpentry tools, sewing machines, food, among others, to ensure that the proceeds of the financial assistance will really be bought readily as their startup capital.  
He said that the opening ceremonies was preceded by the parade of athletes from the Pangasinan provincial capitol grounds to Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) that was completed in time for the opening program at 10:00 a.m.  


“The financial assistance varies from P10,000 to P14,000 depending on the need of each recipient in their project proposals ,” he said.  
Olita disclosed that Maasin City delegation was supported by City Mayor Maloney Samaco, who went with the delegation, some Sangguniang Panglungsod members, Department of Education Maasin City Division, among others.  


Among the project proposals include peanut butter-making, ice cream production, barbecue vending, carpentry works, manicure and pedicure, tailoring and sewing, he said.
With the week-long game competition, the city government is hopeful the Maasin City athletes will bring home medals. Maasin City allocated cash incentives to the medalists, it was learned. (LDL/RGC-PIA8 Southern Leyte)
