MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Dec 8 (PIA8)-- Barangay Himakilo residents in Bontoc are now engaged in a livelihood that uses water from copra. What they thought of as waste water from copra is now the promising source of additional income for residents here. A new technology turns "waste" water to vinegar. | |||
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) provincial office recently provided technology and funding in the amount of P 95,000 for the production of accelerated vinegar in one of their community–based project implemented in the province, averred Dominador Clavejo, engineer and director of DOST, in an interview with PIA Southern Leyte. | |||
Clavejo said their office assisted the said residents to maximize the use the copra water that they just threw out in the process of drying up the coconut meat or copra. | |||
He said the water wastes were processed further into an accelerated vinegar, the technology their office has introduced with the corresponding funding for the local farmers to start the project.Vinegar is a popular condiment in most Pinoy households. | |||
That the newly introduced project becomes another livelihood opportunity for the barangay folks to generate more income, he added. | |||
Clavejo further said the Stella Marie Marine Products in Macrohon, Southern Leyte got P160,000 grant-in-aid for further processing of squids for calamares, wherein the said local entrepreneur is scheduled for Training for Food Safety Standards. ### (ESG-PIA SoLeyte) | |||
