MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Dec. 5 (PIA) -- More than a thousand enthusiastic runners actively participated in the nationwide “One Million Volunteer Run” yesterday organized by the Philippine Red Cross, according to a staff of the local Red Cross chapter. | |||
The runners were mostly teachers from the city schools division, police personnel, city and provincial government employees, and some private individuals. | |||
City Mayor Maloney Samaco, a running advocate, together with his family, also joined the race, which started in front of the city hall and back, at past three in the afternoon yesterday. | |||
The day started with a heavy rain starting early Sunday morning, and organizers worried if the race would push through if the rains went on, said Noli Casas, Chapter administrator of the local Red Cross, during the brief program shortly before the start of the run. | |||
Luckily, the rains stopped minutes before three o’clock, the skies were clear even with overcast clouds, and the fun run event can continue, Casas said, adding that the Red Cross, as a disaster agency, also uses the activity to raise awareness on climate change adaptation. | |||
For his part, Samaco said the nationwide run was scheduled to be held by five in the morning as what other places did, but if that time was followed for the Maasin City run everyone would have bathed in the rain. | |||
Also attending the program were Genis Murallos, City Schools Division Superintendent, P/Supt. Allan Cuevillas, Provincial PNP Director, Gloria Reyes, President of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), and Nikko Mercado, President of the provincial federation of village leaders. | |||
Samaco later pulled the trigger of the improvised pistol to start the three- kilometer run around the city proper. | |||
A raffle draw was held immediately after the run. | |||
Participants paid P 125.00 as registration fee to join the run in exchange for the singlet or uniform, while a P 200.00 registration included a ticket for the raffle draw. | |||
A staff from the Red Cross said the proceeds generated, which are intended to fund their programs and projects, were still being accounted. | |||
The million volunteer run was also simultaneous held in seven other towns of the province yesterday participated by elements of the local police force. These municipalities were Liloan, Libagon, Sogod, Padre Burgos, Macrohon, Tomas Oppus, and Bontoc, the Red Cross source told PIA. (PIA-Southern Leyte/bong) | |||
