MANILA, Philippines — Non-government organization Health Care Without Harm-Southeast Asia (HCWH-SEA) has turned over non-mercury thermometers to the province of Marinduque in a bid to make the Philippines free from mercury-based health care devices.
BOAC, Marinduque, Nov. 29 (PIA) -- It may be a small island province, but Marinduque has the potential to make it in the big league with its varied natural resources waiting to be fully tapped.

The administration of Gov. Carmencita O. Reyes is thus working overtime to utilize such natural wealth for the development of the province without sacrificing the environment, said Dindo Asuncion, who heads the provincial tourism office.
HCWH-SEA executive director Merci Ferrer led the distribution of non-mercurial thermometers from OMRON Healthcare, a partner of HCWH-SEA in the anti-mercury campaign.
A quick tour shows that coconut and other fruit trees abound and beaches practically litter the edges.

Copra and its by-products is the main source of income. Eco-tourism is fast catching up as the major industry.
The thermometers were turned over to the Office of Marinduque Governor Carmencita Reyes for distribution to the six municipalities and the Provincial Health Office.
The province, 40 minutes by plane from Manila, is asking investors to come and help fully develop the island.

Provincial Administrator Renato S. Martinez told the Philipine Information Agency that the province is ready to accommodate investors and businessmen with facilities already in place like transport, communication and power.
“We support the initiative of the province to encourage their hospitals to shun away from mercury and to serve as a model to other local government units, said Ferrer.
The province made its position clear though on the issue of exploiting further mineral resources. Reyes' administration wants to preserve Marinduque as it is, said Asuncion.

It was gathered that the people of Marinduque had already suffered long enough from extensive mining operations in the past.
The Regional Development Council (RDC) of the Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) region passed two resolutions pertaining to the mercury issue last July.
The editorial of Core, the official provincial publication, stated in part: "It is definite that we can live, progress and develop without mining in the province having survived more or less 15 years already."

Given its natural wealth, this province of some 230,000 people is ready to take the road to progress and play a bigger role in the country's development. (DOS/PIA Mimaropa)
According to HCHW-SEA, the RDC serves as the regional machinery to coordinate national and local government activities particularly in formulating and implementing development plans and programs for the region.
