MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte | MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, Philippines – In its efforts to promoting awareness on the use of Geographic Information System (GIS), this city’s local government together with the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College-Regional Environmental Information System (UPVTC-REIS) last November 17 celebrated the international GIS Day. | ||
The celebration was also joined by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH – Environment and Rural Development (EnRD) and Decentralization (DP) Programs. | |||

The system elevates plain, generic maps since it is a computer-based mapping technology that can contribute in improving local planning providing as it does visuals, details and accuracy. | |||
GIS is also considered a very potent tool in enabling correct decisions in conducting plans as it determines the location of infrastructure and patterns of settlements/growth of population, and helps in identifying the safest areas to put proposed evacuation sites in the event of certain hazards such as floods or earthquakes. | |||
UPVTC-REIS representatives say Southern Leyte is positive in using GIS as it compliments their goal of intensifying environmental awareness by promoting disaster prevention and preparedness. | |||
