Efren “Bata” Reyes will play Taiwanese Ko Pin-Yi in the 2012 Philippine Bigtime Billiards (PBB) Face-Off Series dubbed as “Philippines versus Asia” this Saturday at the Pagcor Airport Casino in Parañaque City. Reyes expects a tough challenge from Ko, a two-time WPA World Junior champion, in this event jointly organized by the Mega Sports World, BRKHRD Corp. and aired live over Solar Sports, Sky Channel 70, and Destiny Channel 34. Known as the first Asian to be inducted into the Billiards Hall of Fame, Reyes defeated fellow two-time world champion Wu Jia Qiang (formerly Wu Chia-ching from Chinese-Taipei), 9-6, in the Philippine Bigtime Billiards (PBB) Face Off Series last Dec. 30.
The Parañaque City government Thursday announced that the city has been chosen to be part of the new seven wonder cities during the voting and nomination made among 16 Philippine cities.

Mayor Florencio Bernabe said that aside from Parañaque, the other cities chosen were the cities of Manila, Bacolod, Cebu, General Santos, Vigan, Legaspi, Marikina, Makati, Quezon, Baguio, Davao, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Taguig and Tagaytay.

Bernabe explained that 16 Philippine cities were voted in Phase One of New7Wonder Cities, the third campaign organized by New7Wonders, following the man-made New7Wonders of the World and the New7Wonders of Nature.

He said that this is where people from around the globe get to choose the cities that will qualify for the next phases of the selection and the voting is free, fun and productive.

“I’m proud to be a Filipino. Like our countrymen, I am happy that 16 Philippine cities, among them my home city, Parañaque made it to the nomination phase. My fellow mayors have worked hard to make our cities what they are today, healthy, peaceful and progressive, for the benefit of our constituents we have sworn to serve and to contribute to the national effort to push the economy to greater heights. I am honored that Philippine cities continue to be recognized in international circles. We urge every Filipino to support the nomination by voting for Philippine cities throughout the various phases of the search,” Bernabe said.

The mayor said that Parañaque is one of the oldest Philippine cities. It is home to the St. Andrews Cathedral, the cradle of Christianity in (Palanyag) Parañaque which was founded 439 years ago; Baclaran Redemptorist Church-National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, the most-attended Catholic Church in Asia; and National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians.

Bernabe said the city received local and international health awards among them the 2011 International Awards for Liveable Cities (LivCom Awards) Bursary Award; 2010 DILG-UNDP Emerging Local CHAMP (Catalytic HIV and AIDS Mitigation Programme) Award; 2010 Urban Health Champion, awarded by the W.H.O. Urban HEART Healthy Cities Initiative; 2009 Galing Pook Award for Outstanding Local Governance; 2008 Award for Healthy Cities with Good Dynamics from the Alliance for Health Cities (AFHC) and WHO; 2008 AFHC-WHO Award for Creative Development in Healthy Cities; and 2006 AFHC-WHO Award for Progressive Cities with Great Potentials.
