CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro, Dec. 21 (PIA) – A school here adopted a waste segregation project in support to the advocacy of Mayor Doy Leachon towards sustainability of the Green Calapan program.
CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro, December 23 (PIA) -- Five police officers were recognized by the Provincial Government of Oriental Mindoro (PGOM) as 2011 Outstanding Police Officers on Dec. 12.
The Holy Infant Academy (HIA) complied with the city ordinance on proper waste management through its different school activities. Thru the joint efforts of Fr. Nestor J. Adalia, school director, and Alona V. Cueto, school principal, HIA adapted a child-friendly waste segregation project, by reducing the use of plastics and implementing the smoking ban in all premises of the school and the cathedral.
In a simple ceremony held at Capitol Square, Gov. Alfonso V. Umali, Jr. together with Philippine National Police (PNP) Provincial Director P/SSupt. Anthony S. Alcañeces and Board Member Romeo G. Infantado led the awarding rite to the best performers of PNP officers in the province.
Themed “HIAns in action for Life”, the school launched the “HIAns in action for Clean and Green campaign” which resulted to different activities anchored to the six undertakings of the Green Calapan program namely: No Smoking, No Plastic Use, Earth Hour, Tree Planting, Clean City, and Materials Recovery Facility.
SPO1 Rosalinda C. Mamburan, the only female police officer was recognized for her dedication and responsibility of taking care of the youth, especially females whose rights were abused. She assisted victims in filing 22 related cases against those who infringed the law.
In compliance with the No Smoking Ordinance, Sto. Niño Cathedral Parish and HIA prohibited smoking on parking areas inside the school and the church compounds.
SPO1 Reden P. Dueñas was chosen as one of the outstanding police officers for his responsibilities in making the city proper of Calapan orderly and organized and thereby recognized by his fellow officers in the PNP and even ordinary citizens for him to deserve such prestigious award.
As part of implementation of the No Plastic Policy, the canteen stopped using plastic drinking straws for soft drinks. The school also discouraged the use of Styrofoam - whenever there are celebrations the students are encouraged to bring their own containers.
Meanwhile, SPO1 Severino U. Paala, Police Senior Inspector Anthony J. Ramos, and Police Chief Inspector Neil R. Apostol were chosen as ‘Oriental Mindoro’s Finest’ because of their synchronized and organized coordination to curb or control the proliferation of illegal activities and series of robberies of ‘Villanueva Gang’ in the southernmost part of the province.
Actively pushing the goal of instilling among students the right practice of waste segregation, the School Council of Students (SCS) distributed to each classroom two new trash bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes; and boxes for papers which can still be recycled.
The five awardees received plaque of recognition and P10,000 each as incentives from the provincial government.
Moreover, garbage disposal areas of the school were specified. Located in these areas are groups of bins secured in structured plywood and covered with tarpaulins having cartoonish designs to get the attention of children of the designated areas to throw their trash.
It can be recalled that the Search for Outstanding Police Officers is now on its 4th year since it was implemented in 2008 based on Provincial Ordinance No. 003-2003. It is an annual search to give due recognition to PNP officers whose expertise centered in curbing all kinds of crimes to maintain peace & order and protect the lives and properties of all Mindoreños.
The SCS officers however promised to do more research on how to make waste disposal fun and interesting thus making the Green Calapan program sustainable.(Ara Mariel Bolasco/Louie T. Cueto/PIA-4B)
The search committee was composed of Provincial Director Samuel Borja and his staff Joyce F. Cree of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Rolando M. Abonador from the provincial capitol, Rev. Alexander Rojas from the religious groups sector, and Supt. Bonard Briton of the PNP. (LBR/LTC/PIA-4B)
