LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines - An Army soldier was killed and six others were wounded in separate clashes with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels Sorsogon province, yesterday.


Army soldiers from the 49th Infantry Battalion on board a military truck led by Corporal Gerald Go were attacked by about 20 NPA rebels in Barangay Cadandanan, Bulan town at around 9:30 a.m., said Army Maj. Angelo Guzman, 9th Infantry Division spokesperson.

MANILA, Philippines – Two policemen were hurt as they defend a police station in Sorsogon province from New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, yesterday night.


The rebels withdrew after the Army troopers engaged them in a 30-minute firefight. The encounter left one soldier dead and six wounded.
Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr., Philippine National Police spokesperson, said around 30 rebels assaulted the Barcelona police station in the province at around 11;15 p.m.


The fatality was identified as Private First Class Julius Rodriguez while wounded were Corporal Gerald Go, Pfc. Ronald Cellorico, Pfc. Mcsil Basbas, Pfc. Edwin Padi, Pfc. Rodolfo Fortunado and Pfc. Jervie Micarandayo.
On duty personnel defended the police station from the rebels, resulting in a one-hour firefight.


The wounded soldiers were initially brought to the Irosin District Hospital but were transferred later to the Sorsogon Doctors Hospital.
The policemen were able to hold off the assault until reinforcement came, forcing the rebels to withdraw.


A squad of soldiers from the 93rd Division Reconnaissance Company led by Lt. Clint Antipala encountered about 20 NPA rebels in Barangay Bacalon, Magallanes town at around 6 a.m.
Two policemen were hurt while the casualties on the rebels’ side was unknown.


Guzman said the firefight lasted for 10 minutes before the rebels withdrew, leaving behind a caliber .45 pistol and subversive documents.
The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades. Military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country.


Another 10-minute encounter transpired at around 6:10 a.m. between elements of the 49th IB led by Lt. Anthony B. Lina and about 10 NPA rebels in the same barangay.
The administration of President Benigno Aquino III is attempting to convince again the rebels to return to the peace negotiating table to end the decades-old insurgency.
 
No casualty was reported on the government side in both encounters.
