MANILA, Philippines – Two policemen were hurt as they defend a police station in Sorsogon province from New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, yesterday night. | |||
Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr., Philippine National Police spokesperson, said around 30 rebels assaulted the Barcelona police station in the province at around 11;15 p.m. | |||
On duty personnel defended the police station from the rebels, resulting in a one-hour firefight. | |||
The policemen were able to hold off the assault until reinforcement came, forcing the rebels to withdraw. | |||
Two policemen were hurt while the casualties on the rebels’ side was unknown. | |||
The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades. Military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country. | |||
The administration of President Benigno Aquino III is attempting to convince again the rebels to return to the peace negotiating table to end the decades-old insurgency. | |||
