LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines - An Army soldier was killed and six others were wounded in separate clashes with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels Sorsogon province, yesterday.

“The New People’s Army are concentrated in Campostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Negros, Samar and Bicol region. These areas are among the problematic and our priority to resolve insurgency problem to establish peace,” Oban said.
Army soldiers from the 49th Infantry Battalion on board a military truck led by Corporal Gerald Go were attacked by about 20 NPA rebels in Barangay Cadandanan, Bulan town at around 9:30 a.m., said Army Maj. Angelo Guzman, 9th Infantry Division spokesperson.

NPA strength is diminishing with 4,000 combatants but the movement is considered a threat to national security and hinders development in the countryside.
The rebels withdrew after the Army troopers engaged them in a 30-minute firefight. The encounter left one soldier dead and six wounded.

To wipe out the insurgency movement in the country, Oban said that they’re pursuing programs under the Bayanihan scheme.
The fatality was identified as Private First Class Julius Rodriguez while wounded were Corporal Gerald Go, Pfc. Ronald Cellorico, Pfc. Mcsil Basbas, Pfc. Edwin Padi, Pfc. Rodolfo Fortunado and Pfc. Jervie Micarandayo.

“Through our Bayanihan scheme we will address insurgency particularly in priority areas such as Davao del Norte, Bicol, Negros, Campostela Valley and Samar,” he said.
The wounded soldiers were initially brought to the Irosin District Hospital but were transferred later to the Sorsogon Doctors Hospital.

The AFP chief expressed optimism that the peace talks between the government and National Democratic Front would end the 40-decade insurgency problem in the country.
A squad of soldiers from the 93rd Division Reconnaissance Company led by Lt. Clint Antipala encountered about 20 NPA rebels in Barangay Bacalon, Magallanes town at around 6 a.m.

In Bicol, Major General Josue Gaverza, commanding general of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division identified the provinces of Sorsogon and Masbate as the most problematic insurgency areas.
Guzman said the firefight lasted for 10 minutes before the rebels withdrew, leaving behind a caliber .45 pistol and subversive documents.

Gaverza said that Masbate and Sorsogon are very ideal to insurgent groups due to the rugged terrain advantageous for their guerilla operations.
Another 10-minute encounter transpired at around 6:10 a.m. between elements of the 49th IB led by Lt. Anthony B. Lina and about 10 NPA rebels in the same barangay.

Earlier, Gaverza reported before the Regional Development Council full council meeting that the insurgency problem in Bicol is manageable although sporadic attacks against government forces took place in the past few months here.
No casualty was reported on the government side in both encounters.
