Dietary supplement is a product that contains vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and/or other ingredients intended to supplement the diet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has special labeling requirements for dietary supplements and treats them as foods, not drugs.

Manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and dietary ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded. That means that these firms are responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure that they meet all the requirements of DSHEA and FDA regulations.

Wars of ancient history were about possessions, territory, power, control, family, betrayal, lover's quarrel, politics and sometimes religion.

But we are in the Modern era and supposedly more educated and enlightened .

Think about this. Don't just brush off these questions.

  • Why is RELIGION still involved in WARS? Isn't religion supposed to be about PEACE?
  • Ask yourself; What religion always campaign to have its religious laws be accepted as government laws, always involved in wars and consistently causing WARS, yet insists that it's a religion of peace?

WHY??

There are only two kinds of people who teach tolerance:
  1. The Bullies. They want you to tolerate them so they can continue to maliciously deprive you. Do not believe these bullies teaching tolerance, saying that it’s the path to prevent hatred and prejudice.
  2. The victims who are waiting for the right moment to retaliate. They can’t win yet, so they tolerate.

  • Feature: Unity and peace, major component to La Union’s progress
  • by Jennilyne C. Role

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, March 31 (PIA) --- True to its name “La Union”, which means ‘The Union’ or ‘The Unity’, the province of La Union was formed in 1850 when the Spanish colonial government of Governor-General Antonio Maria Blanco merged the southern towns of Ilocos Sur, the northern towns of Pangasinan, and the western towns of Benguet to the east.

Over the years, the province of La Union battled for peace and unity. Divided politically, the people of La Union supported two political leaderships and conflicting directions for several years.

Crimes were rampant, fear among the people hindered their motivation to participate in governance and development, and progress was on hold.

Rica Palabay, an ordinary citizen of the City of San Fernando said, “I remember the days when bombing in the city, and some areas in the first and second districts of the province were rampant. I was so scared thinking that it may be the end of my life.”

Jonathan Cruz, likewise recalls that suspicious boxes or luggage were scattered everywhere sowing fear to everyone. “Killings were all over and then and you really don’t know where the safest place to go was.”

Then came the May 2010 provincial and local elections where the majority of the political candidates under the leadership of Governor Manuel C. Ortega won. This election results could very well be interpreted to mean that the people of La Union have believed and clearly understood the efficiency and effectiveness of the administration in terms of the actual delivery of programs, projects and other public services.

These services have made a difference in the lives of the people and the environment as well, creating a better quality of life. Ortega then stood firm on its mandate for a sustainable peace, progress and prosperity for its constituents.

In his recent State of the Province Address (SOPA), Governor Ortega identified the major factors which contributed to the progress of the province. “The strong partnership, the commitment and the support of our local officials, provincial officials and employees, and the people are the factors that led us to attain the vision of making La Union the haven of peace and progress, as highlighted in the theme of the celebration of our 161st Foundation anniversary, “Tinnulong para iti Natalged nga Urnos, Talna ken Panagdur-as ti Sapasap” (Working for Sustainable Peace, Order and Progress for All).

People and community development would be difficult, and may even be impossible without peace, order and security at all times. It will be noted that Governor Ortega started his mission of providing a safe and secure environment right on the first day of his administration as provincial governor.

Ortega identified the full support of the La Union Provincial Office and other law enforcement agencies where they reinvigorated strategies in conducting police and protective beats, night-watch operations, police visibility, and checkpoints and chokepoints.

Motorcycle cops and tourist bike patrols were deployed and curfew hours for minors pursuant to Sangguniang Panlalawigan ordinance was strictly implemented.

Community support in crime detection, protection and control was elicited through the re-organized Peace and Order Council, Anti-Drug Abuse Council, and the Provincial Council of the 5 Pillars of the Criminal Justice System.

Our goal is “to make La Union the most peaceful and beautiful province in the country,” Ortega said.

Anti-drug abuse campaign was also sustained leading to the 84 successful operations of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). Around 24.40 grams of shabu, 280,422.9 grams of marijuana (MJ), 136,000 MJ plants, 88,500 MJ seedlings, 79 bricks of 1 and 2 kilograms of MJ and others were collected and burned with an estimated value of Php 58,184,080.20.

Likewise, 80 drug-related cases were filed in court during the year 2010.

In terms of insurgency, the PNP and the Philippine Army declared the Province of La Union as cleared or free of New People’s Army and Rebolusyonaryong Hukbo ng Bayan. Agreements were made to further strengthen internal security operations to preempt the resurgence of the communist terrorists in the province.

These peace and order efforts yielded a booming tourism industry for the province with the entry of surfing in the national sports scene thus realizing the governor’s vision of making La Union the “Surfing Capital of the North”.

Jobs, local and foreign were made available, in partnership with employment agencies. Entrepreneurships, focusing on the One Town One Product were strengthened and supported. Educational scholarship assistance to poor but deserving youth were provided keeping in mind that education is the best strategy to alleviate the people from poverty and lack of opportunity.

“Now that peace, unity and progress are at hand, I cannot allow anyone to destroy it, even if it costs my life,” Ortega said emotionally and teary-eyed during his SOPA. (JCR/PIA1-La Union)

Tobacco administration proposes cropping pattern for Pangasinan tobacco

by Monette H. Herrera

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Nov. 25 (PIA) -- National Tobacco Administration (NTA) Provincial Manager Cesario Sambrana has proposed the month of November to February the following year as the best cropping pattern of tobacco to farmers and municipal agriculturists in Pangasinan as this pattern enables and encourages farmers to be active in planting tobacco and support the development and growth of the tobacco industry in the province. In 2010-2011, there were a total of 3,069. 49 hectares involving 4,502 farmers programmed for burley production for cropping while native tobacco had a total area of 973 hectares involving 1,567 farmers, according to Virgilio Maganes’ report in the Northern Watch last November 19. The NTA now wishes that Pangasinan Governor Amado Espino will hold a dialogue with the municipal agriculturists to show his support to the tobacco industry. Sambrana added that corn farms could easily be planted to tobacco because water is controlled unlike in palay areas where irrigation is used and water is not controllable based on technical studies. Like corn, tobacco must be watered at a controlled level. Aside from the new pattern, farmers should also be supported with drying facilities to cure tobacco leaves. Tobacco leaves must be protected from intense heat and moisture that is why a curing barn which is built from black plastic sheets is highly recommended, Sambrana explained. He also mentioned that through the increase of tobacco production, the province’s share from the tobacco excise tax also increased. This tax share helps the farmers in the barangay thru the farm-to-market roads, farm equipment, and fertilizer subsidies. (ANL/MHH-PIA 1 La Union with reports from Northern Watch)
