Journalistic writing workshops benefit 133 IP studes in Zampen

PAGADIAN CITY (PIA) – A total of 133 indigenous peoples (IP) students from all over region 9 including those from Basilan province underwent free journalistic writing workshops conducted by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-9 in partnership with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP)-9 and the US Embassy in Manila.
These workshops, which trained the students on basic newswriting and editorial writing, have been conducted on June 3-4 in Isabela City, Basilan, June 10-11 in Zamboanga City, June 17-18 in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, June 24-25 in Dipolog City, and on July 1-2 in Pagadian City.
The participants, who were mostly scholars under the NCIP’s Educational Assistance Program (EAP), undertook actual writing exercises that followed each lecture. Their individual outputs were also subjected to critiquing to determine whether they follow the appropriate writing styles for news and editorial.
Topics on social media, climate change and the government peace process were also given to the participants to apprise them of these issues the country is facing nowadays.
Regional Director Woy Lim P. Wong of NCIP-9 has also urged the IP students to develop their writing skills to have an edge over the others when they will apply for jobs after graduation.
On the other hand, Ms. Margarita Baya, chief, Administrative and Finance Division, NCIP-9, has encouraged the participants to speak their own dialect to help preserve their culture. Baya lamented that many young IPs are no longer using their tribal language.
The IP students participating in the said workshop were composed of Subanen, Yakan, Kalibugan, Badjao, Sama-Bangingi, Sama-Badjao and Sama-Kalibugan.
