| The Parañaque City government Thursday announced that the city has been chosen to be part of the new seven wonder cities during the voting and nomination made among 16 Philippine cities. | | The UPS Foundation awarded a grant totaling more than P1.8 million (US$43,892) to the Philippine Red Cross Rizal Chapter – Parañaque City Branch – in support of its Red Cross 143 Training Project. |

|
| Mayor Florencio Bernabe said that aside from Parañaque, the other cities chosen were the cities of Manila, Bacolod, Cebu, General Santos, Vigan, Legaspi, Marikina, Makati, Quezon, Baguio, Davao, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Taguig and Tagaytay.
| | The Red Cross 143 Training Project aims to promote disaster preparedness and management training, mobilizing and empowering teams of volunteers in the 16 barangays (districts/villages) in Parañaque City, which is largely made up of residential areas. In this project, response teams are provided with a kit that contains materials essential to disaster response. A total of 2,000 volunteers are expected to complete the training program by May 2012. |

| Bernabe explained that 16 Philippine cities were voted in Phase One of New7Wonder Cities, the third campaign organized by New7Wonders, following the man-made New7Wonders of the World and the New7Wonders of Nature.
| | “One of the core values of UPS is ensuring safety,” notes Tim Gohoc, managing director of UPS Philippines. “Safety is not just limited within the confines of our company’s premises, but we also try and help ensure the safety of the communities where we operate. UPS and the Philippine Red Cross are partners in service, sharing a common goal of ensuring a sustainable future for our communities.” |
|

|
| He said that this is where people from around the globe get to choose the cities that will qualify for the next phases of the selection and the voting is free, fun and productive.
| | UPS and the Philippine Red Cross Rizal Chapter – Parañaque City Branch have a sustaining partnership. Previously, The UPS Foundation awarded a US$ 50,000 grant to the Philippine Red Cross in 2009, as part of relief efforts for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. More recently, UPS Philippines employees have helped build shelter for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy, helping rebuild their lives two years after the tragedy. |

| “I’m proud to be a Filipino. Like our countrymen, I am happy that 16 Philippine cities, among them my home city, Parañaque made it to the nomination phase. My fellow mayors have worked hard to make our cities what they are today, healthy, peaceful and progressive, for the benefit of our constituents we have sworn to serve and to contribute to the national effort to push the economy to greater heights. I am honored that Philippine cities continue to be recognized in international circles. We urge every Filipino to support the nomination by voting for Philippine cities throughout the various phases of the search,” Bernabe said.

| The mayor said that Parañaque is one of the oldest Philippine cities. It is home to the St. Andrews Cathedral, the cradle of Christianity in (Palanyag) Parañaque which was founded 439 years ago; Baclaran Redemptorist Church-National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, the most-attended Catholic Church in Asia; and National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians.
