+LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines - An Army soldier was killed and six others were wounded in separate clashes with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels Sorsogon province, yesterday.
-“The New People’s Army are concentrated in Campostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Negros, Samar and Bicol region. These areas are among the problematic and our priority to resolve insurgency problem to establish peace,” Oban said.
+Army soldiers from the 49th Infantry Battalion on board a military truck led by Corporal Gerald Go were attacked by about 20 NPA rebels in Barangay Cadandanan, Bulan town at around 9:30 a.m., said Army Maj. Angelo Guzman, 9th Infantry Division spokesperson.
-NPA strength is diminishing with 4,000 combatants but the movement is considered a threat to national security and hinders development in the countryside.
+The rebels withdrew after the Army troopers engaged them in a 30-minute firefight. The encounter left one soldier dead and six wounded.
-To wipe out the insurgency movement in the country, Oban said that they’re pursuing programs under the Bayanihan scheme.
