LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines - An Army soldier was killed and six others were wounded in separate clashes with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels Sorsogon province, yesterday. | |||
Army soldiers from the 49th Infantry Battalion on board a military truck led by Corporal Gerald Go were attacked by about 20 NPA rebels in Barangay Cadandanan, Bulan town at around 9:30 a.m., said Army Maj. Angelo Guzman, 9th Infantry Division spokesperson. | |||
The rebels withdrew after the Army troopers engaged them in a 30-minute firefight. The encounter left one soldier dead and six wounded. | |||
The fatality was identified as Private First Class Julius Rodriguez while wounded were Corporal Gerald Go, Pfc. Ronald Cellorico, Pfc. Mcsil Basbas, Pfc. Edwin Padi, Pfc. Rodolfo Fortunado and Pfc. Jervie Micarandayo. | |||
The wounded soldiers were initially brought to the Irosin District Hospital but were transferred later to the Sorsogon Doctors Hospital. | |||
A squad of soldiers from the 93rd Division Reconnaissance Company led by Lt. Clint Antipala encountered about 20 NPA rebels in Barangay Bacalon, Magallanes town at around 6 a.m. | |||
Guzman said the firefight lasted for 10 minutes before the rebels withdrew, leaving behind a caliber .45 pistol and subversive documents. | |||
Another 10-minute encounter transpired at around 6:10 a.m. between elements of the 49th IB led by Lt. Anthony B. Lina and about 10 NPA rebels in the same barangay. | |||
No casualty was reported on the government side in both encounters. | |||
