History
The fraternity’s original beginnings date back to a group of students who desired to bring Moslems and Christians together into a bond of loyalty, service and brotherhood. It was founded on July 1, 1967 in the Islamic City of Marawi and later established its autonomous chapters at various schools in the City. It had an estimated 1,500 members as of 1990, which composed of Muslim and Christian initiates in the greater areas of North Cotabato and Lanao del Sur. Most prominent of these were its initiates from UTC and ILS of the Mindanao State University in Marawi City and its members from Notre Dame University in Cotabato City. Later, in 1992, USB also obtained chapters in some parts of Misamis Occidental. The fraternity went inactive in 1995 until reactivated in 2012 by Olarte, Velez and Colango - known to be the fathers of modern U.S.B.The Order of Upsibetans History
Purpose and Objective
Article II (Sections 1 to 9) of the Constitution and Bylaws of Upsilon Sigma Beta states the following purposes and objectives:
1. To promote good leadership and the betterment of its members to become prudent professionals in the future.
2. To promote good fellowship among its members and the advancement of Unity, Strength, and Brotherhood as exemplified by its Latin Motto: “Unitas Virtus Fraternitas”.
3. To provide an environment for students to learn how to apply the knowledge acquired from the classroom and their fraternity experience.
4. To encourage a cultural surrounding wherein its undergraduate members may enjoy a social life that will supplement their college activities, giving them the opportunity to think and act in a responsible and exemplary manner.
5. To continue enriching its heritage and provide the means to uphold the values and standards on which the Fraternity was founded.
6. To promote discipline and scholarship and to continue its partnership with educational and administrative authorities of the institutions where its chapters are located.
7. To provide students the necessary tools and proper values in preparation for the future and to support and foster leadership capabilities enabling them to excel in career development and social involvement throughout their life.
8. To promote the dignity of social involvement through service to the college, to the community, and to their fellow man during their college careers in lieu of “hazing” activities, which are both degrading to the human body and the human mind.
9. To develop proper programs to serve its alumni and to encourage their active and financial involvement in all ways possible.
Latin Motto
The fraternity’s Latin motto is derived from its English guide “Unity Strength Brotherhood” (Unitas Virtus Fraternitas). One of its modern founders, Junfil Olarte, who did write most of its guiding principles, elucidated that its Latin maxim stands for the Fraternity itself and the members’ constant adherence to its ideals:
(1) Unitas - Unity among all Upsibetans; also denotes “Agreement” or “Concord” among all Upsibetans.
(2) Virtus - Strength; denotes the sum of all the corporeal or mental excellences of an Upsibetan. It also denotes “Courage” as well as “Excellence” and “Virtue”.
(3) Fraternitas - Brotherhood.
Present Activities
The Grand Alumni Association of Upsilon Sigma Beta (a.k.a. The Order of Upsibetans) was formed to act as a body to establish and supervise its collegiate chapters in the future. Article II of the the Order of Upsibetan’s Constitution and Bylaws states that the Association’s purpose “shall be to create and maintain strong ties between the Fraternity’s alumni and its undergraduate initiates through chapter development, public relations, projects, honors, and awards”.
Its officers meet regularly to improve membership, review policies and constitution and bylaws. It, too, has filed for a charter approval for the fraternity’s key collegiate chapter, which is now pending at the Mindanao State University-Main in Marawi City.
