GENERAL SANTOS CITY – Three persons were killed while close to 30 hectares of farmlands were devastated as flashfloods hit anew several villages in three municipalities in Sarangani and South Cotabato provinces in the last three days.

Len Bartolome, OCD-12 civil defense officer, said the floods, which affected the towns of Malapatan and Alabel in Sarangani as well as Banga town in South Cotabato, were triggered by sporadic heavy rains in the area since Tuesday.

On May 1, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of Malapatan town in Sarangani province reported that three residents of Barangay Tuyan were killed following a flashflood along the Tuyan River.

The victims were reportedly crossing the river when they were swept by rampaging floodwaters coming from the upland area.

The remains of victims Lel Londong, 18, and Bating Masalon, 15, were earlier recovered in a nearby village but the third victim, identified as eight-year-old Jason Londong, has remained missing.

On Wednesday night, floodwaters submerged portions of Barangays Ladol and Poblacion in Alabel, Sarangani due to the swelling of a creek in the area.

The affected areas covered four puroks that were also hit by flashfloods earlier last month due to the overflowing of the Molo Creek.

In Banga town, flashfloods also swept Barangays Kusan and Lambingi on Wednesday afternoon, a belated report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) of South Cotabato said.

Isidro Janita, PDRRMC chief, said the floods destroyed 26.7 hectares of cornfield in Barangay Lambingi as well as various properties and infrastructure in Barangay Kusan.

He said 12 farmers from Lambingi and two families from Kusan were directly affected by the calamity, which left an initial estimated damage of P200,000.

Janita added that the municipal government of Banga and the PDRRMC have conducted damage and needs assessment in the area as well as sought assistance for the victims from the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 12.
